Post by odin »

I'm struggling to find any info on this.

Anyone know what I need to convert a UEF to SSD ?

Thanks.

There isn't a direct process. UEF's are tape images so the programs they contain may be optimised for the CFS filing system. You'd have to examine the programs in the UEF, make any changes to them that make them DFS compatible, then save them to an SSD image.

Many programs don't require changes so you should be able to load a Tape to Disc ROM into an emulator and let it do it's job by reading in a UEF and saving to an SSD.

Cheers Paul.

Using a title I have working on for a while now, Table Adventure by ASK, I just ran 'B-em v2.2' and my WAV to CSW to HQ.UEF just ran perfect!

Thanks.

Now for the SSD bit.

Need more help please!!

I have successfully ran my HQ.UEF file now in both B-EM and BeebEm emulators.

How do I save to an SSD ?

PS: I haven't used an emulator before and love the floppy drive noises BeebEm makes when loading a disc!!

Hi Odin,

Find a suitable Tape 2 Disc ROM image and install it as one of the ROMs in your emulator setup.

Then using the tools in that ROM, you should be able to transfer the programs from the UEF to a blank SSD.

I've never needed to use a T2D ROM before so I can't in all honesty recommend any one above the others so someone else might be able to tell you which one to go for.

some options:
1) if still got .WAV or .RAW (depending on how good/crap the rip is) you can do it from inside a DOS box (run CMD).
download this:
http://www.g7jjf.com/progs/bbctapedisc.zip
and type : "bbctapedisc -r try.raw -s -a try.ssd" or change -r to -w and .raw to .wav
This will throw all the found files onto the try.ssd 'disc image'
2) on an emulator, load in the tape.uef file, and a blank.ssd, then:
*T.
*OPT1,2
*L."" 2000
file x y z
*D.
*SAVE file 2000+x z y

remember tape can handle 10 chars long files names, 7 on disc.
then change the loaders with a disc editor, so change say '*RUN "filenamebg"' to '*RUN "filebig" '

some progs won't work first time, as need to download them from &1900 to &E00.

and if trying to do your tape Table Adventure by Acornsoft/ASK, this is protected with a little file at end that is 'hidden', so won't work, unless you hack/fiddle more.

EDIT: odin, could you zip the UEFhq and upload here, as seems not in archive, or pop in the archive submission forum 8)

Here is the HQ.UEF file. What's your critique on it?

If you want the ssd without having to convert from uef then try this thread

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7190&start=60

It is on the ASK Best 4 Maths compilation.

Thanks for the uef - I have added it to the archive.

My tried and trusted method for converting from UEF to SSD for the last 12 or so years has been to:

- Convert to individual INF files using David Boddie's UEF2INF Python Script
- Drop the INF files into BBC Explorer to create the ssd image

Doesn't work with certain protected tapes, mind.

Yes, I noticed that, too.

I need to be able to write SSD files for Castle Raider, so I'll try and turn my quick and dirty code for doing that into a proper convertor at some point.
