when trying to visit http://b-em.bbcmicro.com/ i get a security warning about the certificate saying that its registered to stardot

ignoring this warning and continuing I still cannot access the site and it takes me to stardot homepage ?

I am accessing it via http but im getting redirected to https and stardot ???? and I have no https everywhere junk plugins or anything like that on firefox

never had this issue before

oh sorry I posted the redirected url in the thread title and post

ah interesting I just tried it in chrome Version 95.0.4638.54 (Official Build) (64-bit) and the page loads fine

but in firefox 93.0 (64-bit) it redirects the stardot forums on https

this is very strange

more strangeness in firefox

http://bbcmicro.com/ loads fine in firefox
http://b-em.bbcmicro.com/ loads stardots homepage and shows the bbcmicro.com https url ???

now im totally confused, I just tried the b-em subdomain again and it loads fine in firefox ????

It looks like someone has set up name-based virtual hosting for the b-em.bbcmicro sub-domain but only for http. When accessed via https the virtual host is not matching so the server serves the content, and uses the certificate, for its default virtual host which doesn't match the DNS name the browser is sending, hence the security message.

Whether the browser tries to upgrade from http to https and whether it allows you to acknowledge the certificate mis-match and continue seem to be down to the browser, not the site. For me, on Linux neither GNOME Web (epiphany, Webkit-based), Chromium or Firefox attempt to upgrade to https but note that Firefox has this as a built-in feature, enabled by an option:
