The "ashtray" can always be cut out (from the back) with an exacto knife if its needed.

I'd love one. Preferably without the perforations as part of the reason I want my is that my 4 y/o has pressed out that bit but I don't have anything to put in the hole. (The other is that the lower right corner is cracking and bits starting to fall off.

What sort of "glue" would be required - thinking this may be a 1 chance go, if its stuck on croocked you may be stuck with a mess

Actually forget what I said as I see you've already opted for the one with the cut-out. As there is nothing I can reasonably do to prevent it being knocked out again, the price is too much for something that may need to replaced again in the future.

You could glue in some thin plastic behind the cut out before sticking it down

I can't see how that would work - if the plastic was strong enough wouldn't is create a hump where there is extra plastic underneath?

I've done it with very thin plastic and it works and doesn't show. But if you're not happy then don't buy one

I guess you could glue something on the inside of the case that covers the hole, and then from the outside of the case you could fill the recess so it's flush with the rest of the case, and then stick on the new surround.

This isn't an easy project and it's looking like people are just going to moan about everything so I'm in two minds as to tell the supplier to call it a day. I'll give him a call tomorrow.

Sticky back plastic I can cope with, in the past I had a bad experience with contact adhesive which left me with a worse result than what I was trying to cover up.

Good effort trying to sort this out bud - there have been a few attempts down the years that have gone quiet, so be great if yours come off! =D>

Definitely interested in a couple myself - this isn't an exact science and I think a few people on here are forgetting that this isn't your bulk production off the shelf screen cover...it's a very very bespoke one off design for a 40+ years old machine. it will require a level of expertise (and bravery!) to do, and yes you might end up trashing one and needing a second attempt....but at the end of the day if you don't try you'll never know will you? :D

I have put myself down for two of these, however I have tried another method successfully.
I have a replacement surround that I have used as a template to draw around on black card, alternatively measuring, drawing straight lines then rounding the corners can be accurate enough.
Cut out the card + 3 holes for LEDs +/- ZIF socket. Use PVA to glue it on AND, once fixed, on the top to give it a sheen + protection.
Probably not as good as the plastic but serviceable.

Update is that they are nearing completion. I am awaiting a photo of the first production.

One issue is who to use for shipping as they will need to be flat and sent in flat cardboard backed envelopes
