Greetings from Toronto!

Post by Bobbi » Thu Sep 24, 2020 6:38 pm

Hi there,

I grew up in the UK and I think the first computer I ever touched was a BBC Micro in junior school, back in 1982. I still remember that lesson in Science class with everyone sitting in awe looking at the single BBC Micro on the bench. I remember the monitor was an old B&W TV they put on a lab stool on top of the bench so we could all see! At that school we ended up with two BBCs for students to use, a model A and a model B (and also a ZX81 and a Spectrum.) When I went to secondary school the computer facilities were more sophisticated - a classroom with 20 or so BBC Bs connected to a SJ Research server over Ethernet, sharing a 20MB disk and an Epson FX80!

I moved to Canada more than 20 years ago and haven't set eyes on a BBC Micro since then. However I am a big fan of 8 bit computers, especially Apple II. I do quite a bit of retro-development on the Apple II platform (see my little site at http://bobbi.epizy.com if you are curious.)

I am getting bored of being shut in the house because of Covid-19 so I broke down and bought a Model B on ebay.co.uk (which should arrive today!) It is an early ICL-build Issue 3 machine, serial 10401. That is kind of cool cos my first job after school was at ICL in Bracknell!

All the best,
Bobbi

Welcome to the forum - glad you managed to get hold of a Beeb :). Hopefully you'll have found the details on fixing the PSU for 110V :D

I haven't, but I have a big 110VAC->240VAC transformer I plan to use.

Also for video I have a cheap composite -> HDMI converter I am using for Apple II stuff. It is supposed to support PAL so we'll see how it does. In the longer term I would probably sooner use some sort of RGB->HDMI conversion.

Welcome, Bobbi. :D

My first BBC was an issue 3 board - a model A, which I later upgraded to the B specification. When you were ogling the machine as a student at school in '82 I was ogling the machine as a teacher! :lol:

I hope it arrives intact. There can't be too many Beebs in Canada.

Well the issue 3 Beeb B just arrived and it seems to have survived the big journey unblemished!

I need to wait until tomorrow to get my hands on a transformer to fire her up! Exciting!!
