I totally agree. Only myself to blame though. I hadn't played it in at least 30 years  The number of times I played to get this score was ridiculous.

And lo and behold, just a few goes later...

I don't think I can stomach much more though. Way too random with the ladders and the placement and timing of where and when the fork appears and the psychic mouse/rat seems to have a hell of a knack of avoiding the poison.

Talk about luck! Contrary to the instructions which say that you can only carry one object at a time, I was able to collect both the oil can and the pitchfork in one jump. I carried on and forked a few gremlins until the pitchfork disappeared and I was left with the oil can which worked as usual. Unfortunately that was the highlight of my game and I didn't get much of a score. Feel like I should get a bonus but sadly no screenshot to validate this surreal feat.

Yay!!!.....another BIG boost in this game from hell.....

I think there is a bug in it. Sometimes I have a man left and all of a sudden the game ends even though one is left. Do you automatically lose if your time runs down? I didn't think that was the case. Maybe I'm wrong.

If on a lost life the monsters all come back to torment you again, even if you've wiped a couple out. Since the oil doesn't change on life lost, I think that the monsters should also be the same as what it was on the last screen.

Way too many points for a rotten rat rolling around in the raucous level. I think less points for the rat, more points for the monsters when you stab them. That would be more to the skill level that way.

Once you hit about the 4th level, it speeds up. I don't mind that. I DO MIND that the monsters tend to rally around where you're trying to start from instead of roaming the whole grid. I think they've been made a bit too intelligent in that respect. If you're going to make the rotten rat random (that's alliteration folks) then you at least should be able to get a fair start on every level with the rat poison in hand.

Those are a few of my rants and I'm sticking to them. It could have been a so much better game, I suppose that's true of many of them.....Trick?

Anyway, a new score.....not the highest or even close.

Once the oil runs out it's game over no matter your lives left. This really limits the game life as the more oil collected the more monsters and yes the faster they get and the more they follow you, which makes breaking 10k a super feat of skill but I think a huge amount of luck in terms of where the pitchfork drops.

I've had games where the fork consistently spawned near the bottom ladder making it much simpler to collect and dispose of the baddies before getting the oil, other games it either doesn't spawn enough or spawns right at the top making it much more difficult to get to. And lucking out with the rat poison helps too, some game you get him 3-4 times, other game he misses it completely.

I have noticed that I get an extra life occasionally although I have seen no trigger for it.

Instructions (from a photo online) seem to say new life at 3000.

That's on the Electron version instructions, anyway:

https://www.everygamegoing.com/inlal_ba ... ry-000.jpg

The bit about 3000 points doesn't appear on the BBC version.

Future project, revisit decent games and add a quick quit & restart option, find myself doing the same in a lot of games, find the quickest way to die if the first life goes wrong. We can't even jump off the ledge... yep tried on both sides of the ledge [-X

Didn't seem to work for "LUCKY EDDIE"

My luck in this game was to be able to fork lots of gremlins in quick succession without the pitchfork disappearing at the critical point. Might have got a couple of rats too.

Now on 8200.

THe most rats I've ever had in a single game is 2. They seem to have an uncanny knack of avoiding the poison. Quite a few times they've popped up and killed me at vital times too.

Two rats sounds about right but as tempting as it is to imagine that they have "rat cunning", I think they just appear randomly. Once the poison is placed a random rat has 75% chance of avoiding it but it seems worse during the play. I collected some stats and recorded 8 rat kills out of 33 possibles (i.e. a rat appears when poison is down), very close to expected average.

Then again, the mind of the game programmer could easily work in devious ways. Easy to imagine what could be done.

Apart from the statistics I couldn't improve my score and take my hat off to those over 10K!

Yeah, you're probably right. It just doesn't seem like it at the time. I haven't done any testing like you. I did stats in the 1st year of my maths degree in uni and it was the biggest load of b******s you could imagine  So many grey areas and dealing with probabilities and a myriad of different distributions that may fit the data or not. It's like an eldritch art.

Anyway... I just came here to post this piccy.
