Perhaps for the protected discs I look at in the future I could archive them as HFE files with DiscBeast. Something else to learn - doh! #-o
Just a note to agree that there are a lot of different archive tools to learn!

And a general offer: if there are people more invested / familiar with Greaseweazle or RPi FDC instead, do feel free to send me the SCP files and I'd be happy to run them through discbeast to check for variants and create HFEs as necessary.

Re: Starting an archive of HFE protected disc files

I've just downloaded a couple of .hfe files from the archive (Level 9 Colossal Adventure & Snowball Adventure), and copied these over to my gotek (Flashfloppy v3.23) but I get a disk fault 0E with both of them when trying to read the disk (1770 controller / DFS2.26). If I try loading the .hfe images into HxCFloppyEmulator I get a load error.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong???

You've been unlucky! The early Level 9 protection is _not_ 1770 compatible and is expected to fail with exactly that error code $0E.

I think the catalog or !BOOT sectors declare themselves as 512 bytes or something like that. The 8271 can read them as 256 bytes by force anyway, but the 1770 is only capable of reading the declared sector size.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. I didn't realise that Level 9 actually developed disk versions of these earlier adventure games. I had always assumed they were tape conversions. I know that BITD I modified some of the tape versions so that they would load from disk, and also save / restore from disk and had assumed these were something similar.

Do you know why the HFE files in your archive (at least the ones I've tried) won't load into HxCFloppyEmulator?

Can you give a link to a specific HFE or two? And I'll check them out.

None of the ones I downloaded worked with HxCFloppyEmulator. So that was:

Elite
Hopper
Colossal Adventure
Snowball
Mini Office II

The fact that I can't get any to load makes me suspect I'm doing something wrong. However, if I create a hfe file using Greaseweazle, it loads up in HxCFloppyEmulator just fine.

This is the error I get. I've tried running as Administrator but it doesn't make any difference:
HxC Error
HxC Error

That HxCFloppyEmulator version looks a bit old. I have v2.5.6.7 and I took the first HFE (Elite) and it loads fine.

Ah. Just downloaded v2.5.6.6 (couldn't find v2.5.6.7 at first glance) and that seems to have fixed it.

Edit: Found v2.5.6.7 as a Beta download.

Thanks
