Cumana disc drive

Post by alembic » Sat Nov 09, 2019 12:06 pm

I have just unearthed a Cumana switchable disc drive model CS400 but a floppy disc does not go right in. The disc seems to hit a metal plate surrounding a latch of some sort. This does not make sense to me, as obviously if the disc cannot go right in, one cannot close the latch on the front. Am I being stupid? What is going wrong?

Sounds like the metal shielding for the drive head has come off.

It sounds like it might be the protective square metal cover for the drive head which has come unstuck and worked loose blocking the disc entry. If you take the lid off the drive you will probably be able to remove it and discard or re-affix.

I have had this problem.
It is as described above and described in another thread here somewhere.
I think the protective cover is attached by some foam which disintegrates and the metal cover drops off.
I don't use my drive much so I have not reconnected it. The drive will work OK without it.
