Setting up dual drive from single drive and gotek (level of complexity?)

Post by rph » Sat Oct 12, 2019 10:48 am

Hi, I've got a gotek (retroclinic) working nicely on my bbc and have noticed the odd 5 1/4 floppy drive on ebay. I was wondering how easy/ tricky it is to make a dual drive. Is it just the case of buying the right cable to connect the two up, or am I being stupidly optimistic? I've done quick a bit of searching for any kind of instructions and guide. Any kind of electrical work is most likely out of my skill level but tech teachers at school and the technician might be able to help.
If it's super tricky I will just stop torturing myself and refrain from looking at lovely hardware on ebay!
Thanks guys
Ralph

It really is that simple.

You need a cable with the edge connector for the floppy and the pins one for the gotek. Set the jumpers for which is drive 0/1. Get some molex extensions/splitter from eBay to get power to both drives. Put it all in a case.

No electronics just some cables and adapters.

Wow, thanks. Currently the gotek is powered from the beeb would both be able to be powered from the beeb. As if not I would know to look out for a mains powered floppy drive.
Cheers Ralph

Also as the current gotek works with the DFS I have on there I'm assuming a dual drive would too.

Yes the Beeb will power twin drives and yes, DFS will support two physical drives (as four logical drives). On the power supply, if you could find a drive with a built-in PSU and you can cope with the slightly larger case and one more mains plug, you will be reducing the strain on your Beeb PSU but no need to worry if you prefer a Beeb-powered drive.

(The caveat on powering two different drives from the Beeb is that you’ll need a power cable that splits the single Beeb outlet to two drive power connectors.)

A gotek uses next to no power compared to a 5.25" drive. Actually uses next to no power compared to most things!

If I was going for a 5.25"+Gotek solution my shopping list would be:

1x Dual floppy case with one working FDD
1x3.5" floppy mounting bracket kit
1xGotek
Either 1xcard edge to IDC adaptor, or a ribbon cable with the right connectors and without a twist.
1xBBC floppy power lead
1xMolex disc drive power splitter

Then I would strip the non-working FDD and PSU from the dual floppy case.
Replace removed drive with with Gotek+drive adaptor bracket
Connect drives as required (probably with the Gotek as drive 0, and the FDD as drive 1).
Connect power (and double check, especially on the Gotek)
Test it.
