Good pick Paul, one of my favourites from way back, not that I can ever get more than a few ships, but lots of fun. Got to 257 on small torpedoes and keyboard.

Ah, another favourite! A couple of tips for this game: Stay on the first sheet for as long as possible, as the enemy ships get increasingly tough with each level. And switch off the shield when not being directly attacked, so that your energy recovers faster. Best so far: 1276

Again I just missed the escape capsule launch button. I must play on real hardware in future!
I scored 1035 on command 1 which is probably my best ever performance on command 1. I was killed by a fast firing plasma weapon enabled ship which collapsed my shields and then collided with me!

Note to Ed - this is not a score submission!

We seem to have a few people who are good at Starship Command so I'm going to thow down an additional challenge.
We played this in the first season of the High Score Cahllenge way back in 2013! The final score posted was 5 minutes too late to be counted but it was most impressive - 3472 - by flibble. My challenge to all the players out there is to beat this score. Who's up for it?

Mine too - I thought with a few evenings' practise I could get something reasonable, but I haven't got to triple digits yet! It just seems impossible to get out of the way of the other ships coming at you and firing... Plus I get all confused with the keys in the heat of the battle, what a stupid keyboard layout!

Some tips might help:
  • Make sure you are playing the Beeb version as the electron version is significantly harder, look at my video for a comparison: video
  • The key to the game isn't really about shooting enemies it's about managing your energy.
  • Turn on velocity and rotation dampers by pressing f0 (f10 on beebem) and f0. This will return your ship to a straight heading and stationary when you release the controls.
  • Moving forwards and turning costs energy. Wait for enemies to come to you and don't chase enemies when they move off the screen. Sit still and rotate your ship using the short range scanner to line up enemies ahead of you.
  • If your energy is low - you have less than half left - and enemies are on screen but not shooting at you then turn off your shields so that your energy banks can recover
From the first time round back in 2013:
sydney wrote:Don't fire more shots than needed as this wastes energy.
Concentrate fire on ships that are shooting you or causing most damage - rapid fire or plasma in particular.
Kill plasma firing ships asap. You will lose less energy ramming them than you will taking a large volley of fire from them.
Don't 'chase' after enemies unless they have rapid fire or plasma weapons.
I'm also toying with the idea of using manual control of the shields. Often there are enemies on screen not shooting at you and if shields are on auto they will come on which will reduce your recharge rate.
flibble wrote:I thought I'd post a few pointers and strategies that I've figured out

1) If you haven't already, hit f5 to enable 'large starship torpedos'
2) You absolutely need to be using some manual shield control. The energy regeneration rate is significantly higher with the shields off
2.1) flip between 'off' (V) and 'auto' (C), ignore 'on' (B)
2.2) You can turn the shields off at any point someone is not firing at you, e.g. them flying away or shooting but the bullets haven't reached you yet.
2.3) Other things that effect regen rate include firing (only fire when you've a realistic oportunity of hitting something), turning and thrusting. Sitting completely still with the shields off recharges the energy very quickly.
3) There's no need to change to a newer ship until you're in big trouble. Each level seems to have a harder set of bad guys and it's quite possible to score over 1000 points on the first command!
4) You don't need to move forward that much, most of the time I'm sitting in the middle spinning round, forward is used to dodge rapid firers/plasma firers that are shooting at you from the sides. When dodging, vary your speed as this significantly messes up their aim, allowing you to escape a lot of damage.
5) If a rapid firer is within a tight cone directly in front or behind you, it can be very tricky to dodgy. As Sydney mentioned driving into them is an entirely reasonable tactic.

I'm going to have to disagree with some of these hints and tips:
sydney wrote:

It's acceleration / deceleration, and *changing* the rate of turn, that costs energy. You can be going full speed, fully turning, and this recharges your energy at the same rate as when you're sitting still.

This is why it's best to play with the velocity and rotation dampers turned off. They're a huge energy suck, taking energy to get you back to being still again. I always used to play it with velocity dampers off, and rotation dampers on; but I'm getting used to playing it with both of them off now, and as well as saving energy, it gives you a lot more control.

  • If your energy is low - you have less than half left - and enemies are on screen but not shooting at you then turn off your shields so that your energy banks can recover
Probably worthwhile to do this even when you have lots of energy left, although no point if the energy is fully charged.
flibble wrote:1) If you haven't already, hit f5 to enable 'large starship torpedos'
Not totally convinced this makes a difference, the instructions say it doesn't, but it's hard to tell for sure without looking at the code. Still, it looks nicer :)

One tip of my own - turning off the shields briefly also lets you see invisible spaceships on the short range scanner.

Just got a score of 1905, about 1300 of which was on command 2, but an invisible spaceship crashed into me before I ejected. Shame, that was looking really promising. Just one more go...

Trying to control energy wastage got me to 660 but I still have a twitchy trigger finger.
