Volcano on the Elk?

Post by Elk2019 » Thu Jul 04, 2019 5:54 pm

Hi all. Volcano was one of my faves on the Beeb. After acquiring an Acorn Electron, I was a bit dismayed to learn that Acornsoft didn't port this classic over to the Elk. Since the game play occurs on a single static screen, I think it would of played equally well. What do other Elk owners think?

I doubt it actually - Volcano runs in Mode 2 and has a huge number of sprites moving around on the screen. The Electron probably couldn't do that because it slows down so much in Modes 0-3.

A Mode 5 version would probably be possible... a challenge for someone on here?

Just got ssd image of BBC Volcano off StoH and tried it on Elkulator v1.0, apart from the obvious Mode 7 gibberish and different colours, to my surprise it is playable !

Nice one! I stand corrected then, and I look forward to giving it a go. I wonder why Acornsoft never converted it?

Had a further look at this, running on the Elk, there's no helicopter blade effect, the people don't wave, the "lava running down the mountain" doesn't display correctly, but strangely, you don't get the large lava flying out the volcano, just the small pieces !

I'm intrigued now, might have a look at the code...... :?

Just tried this for the first time. How impossibly hard is this game! I noticed it's by Michael St Aubyn, author of Imogen - quite a difference in style!

As for why it looks different on the Electron, could be because it's programming the palette directly instead of going the legal VDU 19 route.

There's also some VIA pokery going on; Volcano won't actually run unless expired timers return &ff. So it basically runs on the Elk by accident :)

Just thought I'd post my quick fix for the Elk (only tested on Elkulator v1) !

Lava, rocks, people and colours fixed, plus the helicopter to an extent. Redone the instructions and hi-score table in Mode 6. Only thing is, currently the keyboard input crashes when entering your name for a hi-score !

There's a bit of lag, but I guess this makes it more playable than running on a Beeb !

Can post the ASM text of the whole thing if any interest, it's just messy and unannotated at the moment !

=D> Snuggsy187. Thank you. Volcano on the Elk - at last! Just goes to prove that this could of been ported by Acornsoft BITD.

Thanks Elk2019 and CMcDougall :)

Here's Version 2. Fixed the hi-score keyboard issue. This actually works in version 1 if you "*RUN LOAD", but crashes if you run !boot with a Shift-Break ! A bit strange, probably something on the forums somewhere about it.

Might have a look sometime if there's any streamlining to be done to speed it up a bit - need to put in an Elk timing delay, which is why it currently runs at different speeds depending what's on screen !

This is great - possibly better than the BBC version due to being easier!

Great work, @Snuggsy187! =D> =D> =D>
Is there any chance you can make a UEF version so I can load it into my Elk? (I don't currently have a disk drive controller for it)
Thanks.

Thanks Doctorj1 :D

Here's a UEF image, tested it with Elkulator at normal tape speed. Loader needs a few tweaks, but it works !
My Elk is currently in "storage"..... with a very temperamental Pegasus 400 hanging out of the Plus 1 !!

Interested to know how it behaves on a real Elk ! :D

Thanks, Snuggsy187!
I just tried it on my Elk and it loaded first time; the game itself also seems to work great.
Very faithful to the Beeb version! :D
There aren't any issues I've noticed so far.
