Atom Econet Adapters

Post by hoglet » Wed May 15, 2019 6:28 pm

Hi all,

About the only aspect of the Atom that I haven't really explored is Econet connectivity.

I'd like to have a play, and in chatting with IanB the idea of porting the Atom Software Archive to Econet arose. I think that's very feasible, but first I need to get some Econet connectivity for my Atom sorted.

At the moment, the only Econet Kit I have is
- two Master Econet Modules
- one of IanS' clock modules
- two cables

All of this has been kindly loaned to me by IanS and BeebMaster (for debugging some Co Pro issues).

In terms of connecting the Atom, I'm currently imagining various possibilities:
1 - make a suitable cable that connects Atom PL8 to the 17-pin connector on the Master Econet module
2 - make a small adaptor board that the Master Econet module plugs into, and that has a 20-way IDC connector + a 5 pin DIN
3 - as per (2), but add station ID register (a DIP switch, a octal buffer, and a bit of address decoding logic
4 - as per (3), bit add a pass-through connector for AtoMMC (involves a bit of address decoding logic)
5 - create a clone of an Atom Econet board that plugs into PL8 (I'm unlikely to be able to afford an original)
6 - create a new design for an Atom Econet board (maybe even combined with AtoMMC, with Charlie's permission of course)

I think I've seen someone using a Master Econet module on the Atom, but can't any details.

I also think Phill (Prime) has made a board that was essentially (6) above, but again I can't find any details.

Anyone got any pointers, ideas, or further thoughts on this topic?

Dave

All I can offer is encouragement. It would be great to connect my Atom to my beeb econet! [-o<

Here's one of Phill's photos of his combined AtoMMC and Econet board:

It was IanS's work I was trying to remember:

And BeebMaster has some great photos of various Econet interfaces, include both types of Atom interface:

Dave,

you can find a lot of econet information here: http://archive.retro-kit.co.uk/bbcdocs. ... se/econet/

If you go for (5) then some of the components need to be changed for it to work on an Econet with BBCs on it.

I’ve got an Acorn app note (from before they called them app notes) that I need to get scanned in which details the changes required. Along with a load of other similar Acorn documents.

That would be interesting.

I have gone for (5) because IanS kindly sent me one of his Master Econer Module Atom conversion boards.

I've just posted an update of where I have got to in the Atom Software Archive thread:
