Electron Elite query

Post by trixster » Tue May 14, 2019 8:16 am

Someone on the fb group was suggesting Elite might have been released for electron on disk as well as cassette. Was there a disk release?

I've never heard of a disk release. There's no mention of one on Ian Bell's Elite pages and only the original cassette version is listed on Every Game Going.

There could have been a re-release on disk, though I don't remember seeing anything like that. Perhaps the person was thinking about unofficial hacks to make it run from disk, like those on the EGG entry page, linked to above.

Yes, and there's no mention on FrontierAstro which i thought had a pretty comprehensive list of what versions were released.

Indeed. Never released on disk. There was only ever a tape release. Two versions under acornsoft, one (I think?) under superior. First version had knackered galactic hyperdrive (not that that made too much difference as there was no need to leave galaxy 1).

Fractionally off topic here but what happens if you try the MasterCompact (ADFS Based by default) version of Elite on the Elk ? I'm only picking this one up as ( a ) The M128C version is ADFS and ( b ) If I remember correctly (not seen one for years) the plus expansion for the ELK only really initially gave ADFS ?

I don't have either an emulator or disk image of said version to hand as I write this otherwise I'd of tried. Then again its probably going to demand shadow memory and fall over I guess. :-k , I'm not sure what would happen about the awol Mode7

As above only reason for even suggesting this is both are ADFS 'by default' as such.

Mind you I had a late DFS in my Compact which was a nice addition ! :D

It won't work as it relies on the beeb's hardware which the elk doesn't have.

Plus the mCompact ADFS version is page at &E00 with colours, so that's out the window as elk with ADFS is crap at &1D00  and can only handle B&W per tape version.

Best simply use the Elk disc version (attached).

I have on disk Elite for the Electron from www.acornelectron.co.uk DVD. Unfortunately it’s the tape version transferred to disk and saving and loading commanders is to tape.

Is this the cassette version on a disk.... or an official elk disk version...?

It is odd that there was never a Plus1 cartridge version of Elite. Much of the code could have run in the faster half of the Electron's memory map.

Cartridge games didn't run from ROM, they just used the cartridge as a fast tape (ROM filing system) to load it into RAM. I suspect it'd have needed a fair amount of rejiggling to run from ROM. If you want to know what this would have been like, have a poke at the mega-games cartridge :)
