Battery replacement A3010

Post by andrewvideo » Wed Apr 17, 2019 12:52 pm

I am looking for someone to help me to do a Battery replacement for Archimedes A3010. Would be anyone going to the Wakefield Show and would be able to do it there. Before then I would get all the parts for it. I do live in Sheffield so I could bring round somewhere near cites around.

Everythings seems to work ok. Its remembers the settings. I would like to do before it leaks.

Cheers.

If it's leaked at all onto the board then we can't do it at Wakefield. The clean up really needs to be done somewhere where you can rinse well and let things dry off properly. Wakefield isn't suitable for that.

If it's already removed and all been cleaned up with vinegar and washed with distilled water then I expect someone can fit a battery.

Snip it out before you bring it. If there are any crystals/green on the board it'll need neutralising/rinse in distilled water.

Neutralising needs doing with white malt vinegar. What you need depends on what arrangement you want - I'd recommend something "off board", either a varta mempac on flying leads or an eneloop aaa in a holder. If it's Wakefield and someone's got the soldering gear with them no one's going to charge :)

Really should look into the trickle charging on these... :?

Only need a single holder and one eneloop.

Don't recommend buying batteries on ebay, you never know what you get!

The steps you need to take are:
  1. Take photos of the board and make notes of what goes where.
  2. Remove any connectors, socketed chips etc. Take anti-static precautions when removing chips.
  3. Using electronic size (small) side cutters (NOT the larger electricians type) cut the legs / leads of the existing battery. Be careful not to short anything out, as the battery may still have a charge. Dispose of the battery in the same way that your local authority recommends for NiCad cells and batteries.
  4. Use some distilled white malt vinegar (like this bottle in this post) on the area of the board where the battery was and in the area within a 10cm radius of where the battery was. Don’t dilute it. Use it as it comes out of the bottle. Let it soak for about 5 minutes.
  5. Now wash off the vinegar with tap water. Best if you use running water under a tap.
  6. If you live in an area with soft water that has no additives, skip this step. Otherwise give the board a final wash with demineralised/ distilled water. This can often be obtained from car accessory shops (where it is sold for use topping up lead acid car batteries).
  7. Place the board in a warm, dry place to dry. The board should be placed at an angle so that the water runs off and does not pool or get trapped. Leave it to dry for at least 24 hours, but preferably for 48 hours.
  8. Carefully refit any removed chips

Eneloop is a type / brand of battery- see here.

You need a 1.2V NiMH rechargeable battery (like an Eneloop), a suitable single cell ‘battery’ holder. And if the battery holder does not come with wire leads, some suitable PVC insulated stranded wire.

The 1.2V NiMH rechargeable battery should be a low self discharge type. An ordinary NiMH type is not suitable.

No diodes or resistors are needed.

I'm happy to do it for you at Wakefield. I should have a spare AAA battery holder but you'll need to source the battery.

It looks to be suitable. However, I think similar Eneloop batteries were cheaper on Amazon last time I bought some.

I really wouldn't buy batteries on ebay - the chance of getting fakes is fairly high...

Pro is overkill - no need. The thing uses hardly any power. These are fine: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-Enel ... B00JVV8PS8
