Blinged up BBCs

Post by pixelblip » Sun Apr 14, 2019 5:41 pm

Hi
I've been looking at souped up ZX Spectrums and their flashy new coloured cases and keyboards - some of them look really cool ( the white one with rainbow led keypad). I am getting retro computer envy and am tempted to turn to the dark side from seeing these online!

I also like the membrane coloured keyboards you can get.
Has anyone blinged up their BBC yet or sprayed the case another colour? I know it's sacrilege but I would be interesting to see what people have done.
I painted my BBC keys all different colours and did a psychadelic design on it. I really regret throwing it away now 20 years ago! It had a mandala in psychadelic colours.......all the keys were yellow red green and blue. It looked so far out. I wonder if anyone saw it in the rubbish and kept it!
Maybe I need to do another.........

So post your blinged up BBC pics here if you have some :) Oh and if anyone has seen that BBC I did then post up a picture if it's in your loft!

Slightly off topic and it has come up on here before but this Beeb has to be the most blinged-up micro of all time!

Not mine -- posted on the Fb group, by someone called "Spray" funnily enough:

If you have a problem... if no one else can help... and if you can find them... maybe you can hire... The BBC B Team

You could achieve the very look with a dark silver top, red detailing in the lower case lip and black base...

That black beeb does look properly menacing. The red function keys give it just the right amount of contrast.

Acorn should have put one out in black. For once, they should have followed the style of Sinclair. Though does the paint job make the BBC sexy enough? It's nice but it's still not quite the sleek, slinky editing studio look of this Pioneer MSX machine:

Pioneer MSX.jpg

Mutton dressed as lamb in that case but still. I'd suggest pimping the Beeb with a WIMP outfit, modern arcade joystick or its music keyboard setup. Given what was actually out for it at the time, a paint job only looks a kinky extra. (Unless the casing is already grubby with age.)

I think that black bbc looks really cool. Oh dear black bbc conjures up something in my head
I can imagine a bold blue bbc as well.....with backlit keys....cor that would be sexy.

I think we are going to have to start something off here....maybe it’s time to banish the beige for a bit! The beige is classic 80s of course but looks a bit like a prefab pebble dashed house when it starts getting grubby

White Spectrums are not new. There is some video of Sir Clive with the special WHITE millionth Spectrum made at the Timex factory in Dundee on Youtube. The link is below.

I wonder where this machine is now?

You could probably make a fortune (maybe) doing concept art for all the retro computer kickstarters. You could do photo quality and 8bit versions :)

From https://xyqom.myportfolio.com/cgi-memot ... 2-with-fdx - these are not actual photos, they are high quality 3D renderings, but the machines do look like that in the flesh (perhaps not quite as clean).

Ok I am going to do some funky designs. I will get the 3d model built first in Tinkercad and see how we go from there.
Prepare for something very psychadelic!

The memotech computer look very cool, but only a small amount of manufacturers embraced adding some color to the computers.
The Japanese have very cool units in other colors.

Ah, but there was a red Memotech, made for an unsuccessful sales bid to the Russian education authorities:

I have seen and handled this machine at one of the Memotech meets. It is proper rare. At the time I felt as if I was touching a holy relic!

As this Beeb is on the dark side, is it Kylo Ren’s Beeb? And is it more kryoflux compatible than a standard Beeb?

If the function keys were orange, I'd say yes.

"Kyl Oren" would be the Welsh for "Orange Kyl". Having formed the mental image of a Dark Lord of the Sith named Kyle, with a Trump-esque tan, I can't take Kylo Ren seriously as a baddie any more.
