The Maze of Terror

Post by Dethmunk » Sat Dec 01, 2018 9:42 pm

:D Hey fellow Acorns... This is just an idea I'm floating around. Won't been doing anything with it till next year. But thought I'd share my initial ideas. The Maze of Terror is hopefully the first in a little series of games based on BASIC type-in Programs. Taking the basic idea and code and expanding them with a bit of flashy graphics. They'll still be the simple games but will be lifted to another level hopefully. I'll be coding them in BASIC and then adding some disk based and char based graphic flamboyance.
The first is a sort of Dungeon Master/text adventure style maze crawler. Very basic but hopefully a bit fun too. With monster encounters using turn based attacks. I would like to get some simple puzzles in there, like find Object - use Object in right location - get key etc... May be even the odd secret with OP weapons. LOL We'll see.
Anyway I'm hoping these will be little projects that won't take long at all to do and is a bit of fun for me. :D

Looks beautiful!

But on that title screen, it looks like you're getting 5 colours onto a scanline in Mode 1. I remember from the "enhanced mode 1 pictures" thread that this was discussed as being maybe possible - but don't recall it actually being done. Is it now actually possible?

I see yellow, red, blue and black.

What's the fifth colour?

It does look amazing though :D

Screen shots are 640x512 which is interesting...

Looking good.

Weirdly I've been thinking about/playing a bit with the concept of something similar - but more card based as a focus. Had sort of come to the conclusion of being BASIC based with added graphical whiz as well. Real Life very much getting in the way though.

Magenta. Or is that just clever dithering with red and blue? Works really well if so, because it was the magenta which struck me as being the dominant colour in the image.

Just blown up by the emulator, 320x256 really.

I remember being a bit disappointed BITD with great loading screens followed by poor looking games, but I'm sure your games would look great too.

Hopefully it will inspire others too.

Famous last words!

:)

EDIT: Just realised I might have to sue you for copyright infringement, hijacking my "Maze of" series (currently a series of one).

:-k

Yes there are indeed only 4 colours, black, red, blue, yellow. The purple is blue/red dithering.
As Tricky mentioned the resolution is just blown up in Photoshop and screengrabbed. :D

Make not mistake these games (he says hopefully plural) won't be gaming masterpieces. Just fun little projects. Some may find them interesting in the short term. I'm just doing them to be creative and keep a toe in Acorn pool. Not sure that analogy really works... LOL

Would've been one of the better-known adventures back in the day. Looks canny.

Thanks Streaks.
Hopefully I'll start work on this next year, after I finish a Spectrum game I'm working on - Foggy's Quest 2: The Lost Treasures of OMK. Once out of the way, I'll get back into the Acorn stuff. :D
