Electron versions of archived software

Post by iamaran » Fri Sep 14, 2018 10:46 pm

Today I collected a free Acorn Electron with an Acorn Plus 1 and a P.R.E.S Plus 3, along with a box of tapes, a handful of disks and a couple of cartridges. This is the first tangible Acorn I've owned since 1990ish. Of course I would have loved an Archimedes in 1987, but absolutely couldn't afford one so stuck with my Model B until I eventually purchased a Commodore Amiga 500.

Anyway, all of that is irrelevant! The Electron seems to work well so far insofar as cartridges and disks load. I can’t test cassette loading yet as I don’t have the cable, but I’ve used the gifted cassette recorder and a random tape along with MakeUEFAm and have successfully created a UEF that loads into BeebEm.

So, to get to the point... I have a stack of random cassettes, mostly with hand-written single word titles. To be honest, they are mostly very familiar, - no L@@K - RAREs here. I do wonder though, whether there are any Electron versions of well-known BBC games that are needed for our archive.
So… If I provide a list of these mostly single-word hand-written titles, who can say “needed”, “already archived”, “don’t recognise, please uef”?

Cross-referencing with the Stairway to Hell, Acorn Electron World and Every Game Going is usually a good way of determining whether something has been archived.

Other than that, post the list and I'm sure the usual suspects will look through it. :)

I think I will list each cassette here. If anyone wants anything UEFing, let me know. If anyone wants a physical cassette posting to them, let me know.

Expect reliability over speed ;)

Obviously I can't guarantee that what's written on each inlay is what's on the tape!

Enjoy your Electron!

pity the originals have been recorded over
But usually with Prog Power tapes, same game is recorded twice on sideA, sideB is always blank, so may be the 'extra'/handwritten games are on sideB

the quality of these tapes are now 70% bad, & always need tape head cleaned after...

Not much missing nowadays, there is a thread that may still be MIA , if they ever pop back up :|

From a quick glance it looks like lots of commercial games plus type-ins from Electron User and other magazines. Nothing obviously missing from the archive as far as I can see. Maybe others will spot something.

I did a quick search of StairwayToHell for Elk tape versions of all the games you listed. Here are the results, in the order in which you listed the games, including duplicates:
Game names without links couldn't be found on STH -- which isn't to say they're not there: I might just have used the wrong search term because of a typo or something. Conversely, some of the links might be pointing to the wrong game (i.e. a game that has the same name as the one on your tapes but might actually be a different game!).

Here are all the games that apparently aren't on STH:

Might be worth searching bbcmicro.co.uk just in case some of the potentially missing games are on there. (Electron versions should be labelled on bbcmicro.co.uk.)

They'll all be on Acorn electron World. STH has a fair paucity of elk titles.

It would be nice to think that an Electron version of this exists, but perhaps it's just the BBC Micro version. I think it runs, but incredibly slowly.

Yes, the tape heads are giving me problems. What I think I ought to do is to finish the cataloguing, then if anyone with greater skills and more time than me wants to check any out for the archive then I'll gladly post them out.

I realise that listing in this way is hardly efficient, but...
