left and right brackets on beebem

Post by Microboy » Fri Jun 08, 2018 6:26 pm

on a basic PC, a bracket looks like this: [

on the Beebem emulator, that is replaced by an arrow facing left and one facing right

this is annoying for two reasons

1: the BBC tutorial uses the brackets and not arrows
2: it's difficult to imagine an assembly program filled with Arrows and Basic code

As tricky said, that is correct behaviour on real hardware. Change to one of the other modes. Mode 7 I find quite hard to write programs in anyway.

The beebwiki covers all the modes

By default, the Beeb has MODE 0->7. Mode 8 would be the equivalent of mode 0. (There's a theoretical mode 8 documented in the AUG, which is achieved by direct programming of the video chips, but it's not a supported mode).

With the Beeb, Modes 0->6 are bitmap fonts, and so the [ character shows up as a [. Mode 7 is a Teletext character mapped mode, and in that mode the [ shows as an arrow. Similarly the \ character shows as a "1/2" half symbol. However this is just how it looks; it's still the same character.

Assuming a BASIC program. If using an emulator you need to select where the disk is from the menu. In a reall Beeb you would just insert a real disk.

Set to disk, check what is on it and save:

Code: Select all

*DISC
*CAT
SAVE "FILENAME"
