Acorn Master and Electron cartridge breakout

Post by simoni » Tue May 29, 2018 9:37 am

I recently designed a breakout board for the Master and Electron's cartridge interface. The design features 2 PCBs, one which plugs into the cartridge slot of the computer and another which fits down the side of a standard breadboard to make it far easier to prototype designs. Interconnection is via a 50-way ribbon cable (which you can either make or just use an old SCSI-1 cable).

The cartridge adapter also groups the various signals into logical groups (data bus, address bus and signals) and the breadboard adapter has a clear silkscreen showing the various signal names (according to the pin-out provided in the New Advanced User Guide).

The project is open-source hardware, so you are welcome to grab the gerber files from the Github and make your own. Full instructions, schematics and links are provided by the project article available on my website:

That should be useful, use this sort of thing on the Raspberry Pi, makes it much easier to plug theright bit together. Will add to hardware list when I get a spare second.

Although as I moved it to github pages anyone can fork and do a merge request on the kit list now.

I should also say if anyone is thinking of doing a run then put me down for one.

I've ordered a set of ten, so once they've turned up I will be able to offer some up.

I have ordered the fuses as well, but only one set of IDC headers as I couldn't find a cheap china based supplier.

Hi Guys,

Once they arrive I'll pop up a post, not looking to make a profit, just to cover the cost+postage. 8)

You should always at least cover cost, postage and your own board. That way you get the warm feeling of getting something for free even though it made you do a lot of work to get there :D

The boards have shipped and are currently in Hong Kong!

Forgot that when you ship via a courier like DHL you always get stung for customs and "processing", so had to pay an additional 16 quid before delivery.

I also bought some IDC headers as well, so when I put these up it will be:

2 Boards (Cartridge & Breakout)
2 IDC Headers
2 Fuses

You'll have to source (make) the IDC cable yourself. I also don't plan on building these myself, just packaging the bits up.

Unfortunately they are scheduled to arrive on Wednesday (The fuses are coming from china as well, so I'd have to wait for them to arrive anyway) and I'm at Download festival then, so hopefully I'll have a nice pile of stuff waiting for me when I get home from there!

The reason I decided on a 50-way cable was a lot to do with the fact that's what SCSI-1 uses... so if you can find a short SCSI-1 cable, it's probably cheaper than making one :)

Yeah, I couldn't see any apart from ones with like 8 drops on them! lol

There's an eBay seller who makes up IDC cables, think it was about 3 or 4 quid for a cable so I went with that. It arrived this morning.

These turned up today! I'm away from tomorrow and the fuses haven't turned up anyway, but close to be able to put together the bits required to build the boards.

I'm away until next Monday, I'll work out how much a set will be and ask those who requested if they still want them.

Still waiting on the fuses from china, so can't do a lot until they turn up anyway.

Yep. No problem.

Just done a quick add up (got stung for 16 quid import duty), I think it’s going to be about 6 quid for the kit. Both pcbs, 2 idc headers, sil headers and fuses.

plus delivery.

I’ll have to double check when I get back, but it’s not going to be a bank buster! As I said, it’ll include all the bits for the boards, but you’ll have to source the cable yourselves (I can post a link to eBay where I got mine from if that’s allowed) and do the soldering yourself, but all the bits for the boards will be included.

I’m back from download, I haven’t forgotten you guys. The fuses turned up from China and now I’m waiting on some Jiffy bags and then to work out postage, once that’s done, I’ll tag people in order that they expressed an interest along with the price!

I’m just trying to figure out postage, I think I can get away with a large letter (smallish Jiffy bag), slightly concerned about the idc headers arriving without bent or damaged pins.

I won’t be able to send these by anything other than normal post, as due to health issues I can’t get to a post office to post them. (If any go missing in the post i’ll Just refund and hope people are honest!)

Anybody else sent anything similar through Royal Mail and what was the cost?

You can buy stamps on the royal mail website. Fairly sure from memroy it gets you to give weight and dimensions and gives you the cost, before printing out the label.

If you browse around the Royal Mail website, all the info is there. I don't know if they still have a guide in the form of a PDF.

As said above, as long as you enter the correct details into the online postage form, you can pay for the postage and print out a label (or a sheet of paper that you can attach to the package). The only other requirement, is that the package will fit through the slot in the post box...

With regards to Jiffy bags and similar, in order to check the thickness, you can make up a template from cardboard (or wood or indeed anything suitable). As actually trying to measure it is not too easy (well, not when you are close to the allowed limit).

For things that may get bent, either put in a small plastic bag and then tape to some thin cardboard (maybe even sandwich between thin card), or use foam or recycle some polystyrene packaging. Again, put in a small bag and then use tape so the item can't work it's way out of the foam/polystyrene.

The small bags I use are either me reusing the bags that components were supplied in, or new small clear resealable bags. By putting the items in the bags, you save the person receiving the package from having clean sticky tape glue off the items

Ok, thanks guys.

Potential issue though, I don’t appear to be able to send PM’s so can’t contact people with payment details, I’d rather not put my email in public with those dastardly spammers....

I am on the Facebook bbc group, so may have to resort to messenger or something.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get some of these shipped to people over the weekend, will use the Royal Mail website to figure out postage cost and pop up a picture of the kit for you all to see.

Sorry for the delay, download festival got in the way!

Thanks Daniel!

It's going to be £6.50 for the kit, includes the PCB's, fuses, SIL headers and IDC headers. (As mentioned before, you will have to source the connecting cable) + £1.01 for 1st class UK delivery, so a total of £7.51.

ALL GONE! Thanks to everyone that took a set off my hands!

8. @roganjosh [paid and posted! 18/06/2018 Thanks]
9. @MartinB [paid and posted! 20/06/2018 Thanks]

If yours fails to turn up, I will refund you the cost, I cannot get to the post office to post by tracked/insured delivery so I hope that people are truthful and that the Royal Mail doesn't lose any!

And, here's a pic of what you will get (obviously you won't get the whole strip of fuses, just one of each type!)
