Here you see (chunk &0111) 11 01 04 00 00 00 B1 48 00 00
BeachHead1.png
from the log file created from makeUEF you see the waves before the dummy byte is correct it does calculate the correct waves (&C42F) after the dummy byte but zero is written to the UEF.

Code: Select all

Carrier tone with standard dummy byte written.
Length before dummy byte is 18609 waves. [in UEF &B148 (low byte 1st) &48B1 Dec is 18609]
Length after dummy byte is 12228 waves. [in UEF &0000 but should be &2FC4 (low byte 1st) so &C42F]
Baud rate of the preceding data was 1233.363

Is the acornpreservation.org site still online? After a lot of work for over a year I have a new version of CSW Viewer. It has small improvements to the user interface and is better designed and written. I have some things to finish. Does anyone recommend a standard statement for copyright etc? Also I am planning to use a installation program builder. Does anyone recommend any of them? I have Win64 and Win32 versions of CSW Viewer for Windows 7 and later. The csw.exe program will not work with any 64-bit Windows unfortunately.

ooo that sounds great glad to hear these very useful utilities are still being worked on, and to the best of my knowledge acornpreservation.org does not exist anymore in any form, which really is a pity.

I put the CSW/hqUEF files here, if you need all them back :
http://www.mediafire.com/file/h13hsx7m6 ... 4.zip/file

(my note, was 94 downloads)

Could you send me that UEF, CSW and log of Beach Head?

I have my new CSW Viewer ready. Can it be held at STH? It is usually at World of Spectrum but they aren't updating that site now.

Sure , here they are in a Zip :-
In the log file I have added in () the hex values of what they should be for the before and after.
But its any HQ uef created with MakeUEF 2.3 that has dummy bytes in the tone that suffers from this bug.

And the csw viewer yes I think that the best pace is to post it here as I don't know of a Acorn site where you can put that sort of thing these days, unles someone else has a better site to host it.

I haven't got into this bug much yet. A uef file can be uncompressed by giving it a gz extention and uncompressing with 7zip or something similar. I can look at a uef file with FileRay and my template. It was fee only then free before the company discontinued in 2008. It crashes when scrolling on Windows 10 so I am looking at whether I can get it working.

Has the site administrator been about recently?

STH isn't updated any more either but I can pop a subfolder onto the server e.g. stairwaytohell.com/makeuef and if you send me the archives together with a simple html file linking to the latest versions of each program (makeuef.zip, freeuef.zip etc) I can upload it no probs Fraser.

Well that's how I have been working around this bug since I discovered the dummy byte bug is to as you say rename to .gz uncompress it look for the 11 01 04 00 00 00 string and then fill in the correct value for the second number which is at the incorrect value of zero (low byte 1st).

I could make my archive an attachment here but its 13MB. Can the forum take that? I don't have any other new programs. I'm not sure what you are saying about a HTML file.

I have not seen that before. Have you tried downloading it again? What version of Windows do you have?

Do you find selecting a range of points by clicking on bars ok? I have to be careful that a point is selected.

I have found another file that may be required for the 64-bit version. I have attached it in gz form.

I have tried running the 64 bit version on 5 different computers(win 10 home/ent windows 7) all with the same result and trying all the fixes I can find on Internet yield no fix to the problem.

I got same.

This prog just makes CSWs with filter, so does not fix the first block data lead in, so HQuef are still 'wonky' for 0.1% of games that actually need it.

Do you have these installed:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 redistributable x64 and x32
I also have that for 2010, 2013 and 2017.

Microsoft .net framework 4.6 SDK and targeting pack

What happens if you move CSWViewer.dll somewhere so it can't be found? Do you get the same message?

The exe file must be doing it. That's an older version of .net. It is made with C++ Builder Community 10.2.3 so installing that would probably make it work. You can get a years use for free and if your not interested it can be uninstalled leaving .net installed. The latest version is 10.3.1.

I got the message "2 distinct wavelengths not found" which is ok. The range can be 88833 to 88928 and then they are coloured ok. It is slower at this than it was because it checks the wavelengths more. I haven't reproduced your error message.
