CTRL-ENTER during message entry

Post by SimonSideburns » Mon May 11, 2020 8:53 pm

I am used to using Microsoft Outlook and as I am a touch typist I prefer to use keyboard shortcuts when I can (and when I can remember them), so you can imagine my surprise and delight when by mistake I entered the CTRL-ENTER sequence on my keyboard after I had entered a reply to a forum post.

In Microsoft Outlook, when composing a new email to send you can hit CTRL-ENTER to send the email and close the window. It seems that on the forum the same sequence submits the post or comment.

I thought I'd mention it in case it is of use to anyone else.

I didn't know that. I almost always preview first.

I do use that sequence in Thunderbird, but it gives you an "are you sure" box before sending the e-mail.

It's getting confusing now working out which applications need RETURN or CTRL-RETURN or SHIFT-RETURN or ALT-RETURN to insert a line break without sending, and sometimes the web browser version of something you might also use as a desktop application is different!

I've noticed for a while now that there isn't a cancel button any more when composing a post. Every now and again I write a bit of a ramble and then think better of it and don't post. I used to cancel, now I have to navigate away from the page to lose it.

Interesting...because I'd already previewed and the whatever-you-call-it was on the preview button, when I pressed CTRL-RETURN it previewed. Then I right-clicked on submit, to make that the focus without submitting, and the next CTRL-RETURN submitted.
