Stairway to Hell is Ended

Post by BeebMaster » Sun Jul 25, 2010 10:56 am

Was it an April Fool? I see it's dated 1st April and it's now 25th July and we're still here!

The forum is still here, for now, but you may have noticed the news is no longer updated - it's updated on BBCMicro.com instead. If you haven't been checking there you'd have missed out on three items of recent news. It's just that DaveM is busy organising some get together in a guest house in Blackpool for him and a few of his friends.

So, no - not an April Fool.

If you ask me bbcmicro.com just looks like some soulless blog of which there are thousands out there already.

I've always felt Stairway to Hell epitomises that quirky British character like Red Telephone boxes, 70s Dr.Who and Morris dancing.

bbcmicro.com also appears to be totally dead - having not been updated since the month it was created and is now full of Viagra spam in the comments.

I've always liked the what's new section of Stairway to Hell with it's straightforwards html being easy and clear to read - whereas bbcmicro.com with all its fancy stylesheets and 'professional' colour scheme makes me feel like I'm at work reading a TPS report - and all the info is bunched up annoyingly in the middle of the screen.

On a more practical note its file search is total rubbish compared to the one on Stairway to Hell with no sorting options and all the original file dates are lost - which were fun to use to see when games were originally re-discovered and archived.

Just my opinion.

@Kecske Bak

Thanks for the info - I had a quick scan thru your blog and will need to read various posts in more detail at a later date.

Following the slight drift off-topic...
but you may have noticed the news is no longer updated
Ahh, well yes, but I seem to remember that it was quite common for months to drift by between updates even when it was updated. (Although, I want to make it 100% clear that this isn't being snarky towards Dave - I really appreciate that running things like this are a load of work, much/all of which is unpaid.)

@PitfallJones
bbcmicro.com just looks like some soulless blog
I agree with you to some degree, but my (uninformed) take on the move was making it so that the onus was off Dave to make updates, and opening the door for a more community effort.

What was the recent news? I'm wondering if I have a caching issue, or if 23rd April is considered recent :D

Humm and the front page of STH looks very much to me like "we're closing down don't bother registering"

Perhaps it's just me but this may drive people away :(

Cheers.

Well come along to Blackpool in November, and you may be able to play it again.....hopefully along with several other games of it's ilk, Hexen, Heretic, Quake etc.

Basically the sort of things that can be run on a P233 PC under DOS :)

There's no plans to kill the forums though, are there?

I mean, if he's stopping the stairwaytohell.com website, will he let the domain expire on its next renewal?

If so, what happens to the forums? :? :(

Don't panic - the forums will live on, though as part of a new Acorn archival site (which incidentally, I won't have any involvement in the development of).

Peter (Samwise) will lead the project, and I know that others have already pledged their support.

I'm sure that Peter will share his ideas for the new site in due course.

That's good to know. =D>

I'd hate to think a lively forum like this was going to die when it was still being used so regularly.

Hurrah! =D>

It would indeed be great to have a Acorn equivalent of the WorldOfSpectrum site, containing a complete software archive, forums, and the rest. It'd also be sad to lose things like the Hac-Man archive, Lost+Found, game author profiles and so much of the other stuff on the STH site that I've enjoyed through the years - including the stuff from the 'early days' like the arcade/Beeb games comparison page.

Anyway, thanks for all these years of hard work Dave - I for one am enormously grateful for all you've done in keeping the scene alive, and I hope you're not going to be taking too much of a backseat in the future. Here's to the next 11 years! :)

Probably not.

He's welcome to use the domain should he wish, but because it's his intention to develop an all-round site (covering Beeb, Elk, Atom, Arc/RISC OS etc) it would make more sense if he were to go with a domain that was more broadly representative of its intended content/target audience etc.

I've split this discussion out from charlie's original question which was completely different to where the topic ended up. I've also moved the new topic into the feedback forum, as that one's about as on-topic as you can get.

Yep, I'm back.

@Rich, it's not going to happen overnight and will require a lot of data/input from the community (which is a lot smaller than the Sinclair one, I suspect) but that's a target I'd like to aim for. I also hope a bit further down the line we can cajole Dave to spend some more of his time with us. I think he'll find it very hard not to want to get involved. :)

As for the new domain, Dave has been wanting to retire the STH domain name for a while, which is fair enough. He has agreed, tho, to let me carry on referring to them as the Stairway To Hell forums, even tho they'll be living on a new site as a sort of homage to their heritage. We'll keep the same look 'n' feel as well.

So, to that end, apart from some needed maintenance and some moving around in the back-end, the only significant immediate change you'll be aware of will be the move to a new site name. We'll set up redirects from the stairwaytohell.com domain, which Dave will continue to renew - the old site will remain online, but frozen to new updates, if only because it will take more than a while to get close to replicating its content.

Wrt the new name, I've started a new topic so anyone who wants to continue leaving plaudits for Dave can continue using this one. :)

Sam.

The other day Samwise mentioned that he wished he'd been able to see STH in its earliest incarnations.

Well, that prompted me to go through a load of old backup CDRs and this morning, I found a folder which contained a copy of the site exactly how it appeared when it first went online on 1st April '99.

I've uploaded it here for your own personal amusement!:

Out of little acorns....

It is one hell of an achievement and the mainstay of the Beeb hobby. I take my hat off to your tenacity in building and keeping this going and growing for so long. It is now a priceless and irreplaceable centre of knowledge which we just cannot do without.

I've dipped in and out since those early days and in the last couple of years finally had time to pursue the hobby properly. This wouldn't have happened without STH and the many helpful people who use it.

Thanks

Just viewed the old site. I actually do remember when it looked like this! The Internet was something I looked at in my local library when I had long lunchbreaks as a bank cashier. I don't even think there was any hotmail. When I clicked a link, you launched Outlook on most sites. I remember trying to send someone a message and being scolded by the librarian because they were sick of receiving messages that were replies to their customers.

About two years afterwards, I started the Acorn Electron World site and originally it was a list of HTML games in RED text on a GREEN background. I believe it was in Tahoma, Font-Size 12. Written with <font> and <center> tags. It was hosted on Yahoo geocities which had a 10Mb size limit - and I filled up about 1Mb of it. Then I rewrote it using frames and it was black text on a white background. And then finally I rewrote it again with JavaScript. Then again, in an ill-fated ASP.NET move which worked, but was bloody horrible. So back to JavaScript. Then rewritten without frames, and with all the PD and other libraries all filtered out. Then of course all of the artwork recreation days, giving everything a loading screen, etc. Then finally now rewritten in HTML5, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and jQuery.

A friend of mine thinks by the time I reach 40 Acorn Electron World will probably be a 3D Acorn Electron with AP4 attached, and a scrolling library of disc images. He said that no-one will want to download, unzip and then play disc images; they'll just want to play all the games in the browser. So he said I'd better be prepared to write further loading screens with control keys on for every single game.

This post has got a bit self-indulgent, so I'll sign off. This old site was a real trip down memory lane, just thought I'd share.

Hey I've just realised, yesterday was the 10th anniversary of Stairway to Hell's closure (and exactly 21 years since it was founded).

I still don't have any plans to bring it back (it looks so dated now, lol; in fact - the design was already dated when I launched it in '99!) and besides, the bbcmicro.co.uk team have pretty much everything covered gaming wise, now.

Anyway, here's to another ten years* of inactivity on the Stairway!

* = the domains' currently registered till 2026 so it shouldn't be going anywhere anytime soon ...
