Well done Lurkio and CRB.
Mainly well done to ctr.

I did see a problem in this. If you turn these gifs into BBC pics how you gonna know what is colour flashing and what isn't? You could save the frames of course and play 8 back in sequence but it's not the same as saving a picture with the flashing colours and animating it.
But that's exactly what ctr's program does and that's why it's so brilliant: it saves a picture with flashing colours and then his BASIC program $.ANI animates it!

For example here's one of your animated GIFs converted back to flashing-colour MODE2 BBC format with img2beeb.exe and then animated using $.ANI. Press the zero key to select the pic:

EDIT: Admittedly the animation there looks a little bit jerky or cyclic for some reason..?

How on earth did you work that out CTR. That is genius. I take my hat off to you.
We sure have some talent here don't we......all of us together.

Ooh, hang on -- I'm getting consistent crashes whenever I try to use img2beeb.exe to convert the bus animated GIF:

(Nostradamus and Summer Meadow convert without problems.)

I didn't notice you'd got it working until I'd nearly finished changing it to run on .net core. So in theory it should run natively on macOS now. Note that the instructions are quite different.

The animated bus works fine using the old version on Windows and using the new version.

Yep, the new version works perfectly for me on macOS. Superb!

EDIT: Actually, I'm now getting a crash on macOS whenever I try to convert Runner.GIF:

Code: Select all

$ dotnet run
/Users/xxxxx/xxxxx/img2beeb/gifs/run.gif
Process terminated. Assertion failed.

Looks like pixelblip applied a sneaky filter to the animated GIF that makes it impossible to auto-convert back to MODE2 format, even for ctr's amazing program!:

Yes Lurkio I got caught out there! That is the first time I have done that which was a bit naughty. Call it artistic license.
The glow effect looked so good I thought I'll put it in. Some of the animations use a few extra tricks ( the runner did ) so I bent the rules a bit there. Let's consider it a slap on the wrist ok and I promise not to do it again!

I wonder whether to post art up that could be controversial and with dark humour.
Satire and sarcasm is not always palatable...but then art has always challenged the world around us good or bad....for better or worse.

Maybe create another ‘dark humour’ thread? People can then always not look at it.

You can't convert that Lurkio!
I had to use jiggery pokery. A bit of a cheat for now but it spices it up a bit. The colour cycling is BBC micro.
Really what I need is to be able to use mode 2 sprites....
