Acorn Atom key switces old type

Post by TheCorfiot » Mon Feb 10, 2014 8:46 pm

Hello chaps

I have picked up a very abused Atom from fleabay...
PCB wise she can be restored but it is an Issue3 with those horrid wierd plastic keyswitches and a good half dozen have been sheared off..

I really would love to restore her and fit a GODIL too.

Does anyone have any spare contacts or know where I can get some..
It's missing two keytops too....

Cheers
TC :)

Worth a punt at that price - nice one!

In other related news, it looks like our motorcycling friend has sold his Atom (for £500).

And a Beeb with MMC for £225.

Flippin' 'eck like!

Did we ever get a design drawing for those little plungers (and the surrounds?) I seem to recall intending to print replacements, and they do look eminently printable :)

Hi Martin

Do you think your previous supplier maybe able to supply a further 5 or 6 plungers?
Or if daniel can print some I would be happy to try them out...

Cheers guys ;)

The board is in pretty good nick but I wont power it up until it's had a good inspection.

Hi TC,

The plungers are like rocking horse s**t and getting them out is no mean feat (without breaking the surrounding frame). I don't mind lending someone one to measure up to print but I'd like it back at some point, I don't have that many. They're quite small and fiddly so I'd be impressed if someone could print one accurately.

The plungers and keys and springs were on EBay a wee while back, i'll look in my old e-mails to see if I can find a reference to any conversations we had and his e-mail address.

Hi Daniel,

I'll give it a go to make a STL AutoCAD drawing. I don't know if there's any difference between an issue 4 or 5 key? My Atom is an issue 5.

Atom Keyboard Insert.jpg
They're about the size of a ten pence piece.

I vaguely remember trying a BBC key which fitted on the top (cross shaped bit) but it wasn't at the same angle as the Atom ones.

You could possibly print an updated version at the right angle to use BBC keys, maybe :)

That's the bunny... I think I could reproduce those in openscad and rattle them off ad-infinitum, but do need a proper drawing and set of measurements done with callipers...

Or a sample to measure myself.

Edit: And Martin - yes, once we've got the basic design down, adapting it to work with beeb keys will be a piece of cake.

I wouldn't recommend it but it would be remiss of me not to mention some other, third way..

My first Atom (issue 3, springy plungy type) had received a key transplant where the old plastic frame was cut away and new holes drilled slightly south of the northern-most hole of each existing pair. A beeb switch was then fitted and a wire jumper used to connect to the now slightly offset pad. I'll see about some pictures later.

The key tops sit slightly higher so the Atom gets a more proud look but it seemed to work. You could perhaps use a slightly modified frame from an old beeb keyboard for stiffness.

Like I said, I wouldn't recommend this ... butchery ... as for one thing I'd be worried that the strain on a single solder joint per key, jumper or none, would put the board at risk.

I'm sure I put some pictures of the repair procedure for this board somewhere. Was it on here?

Looks like it might have been re-listed for a mere £399?

Previous one was definitely marked as sold... So assuming no shenanigans this should be a different one...

(edit: it is, the original was 5V modded, this isn't)

sort of offT, but glad I have a Issue5, those keys must be a complete nightmare to fix, and going by MartinW's wiring  , must have lots of patience to fix, or lots of big cigars :x

looking at the Iss5, can they just be changed with either a beeb or elk keyswitch :?: ((just incase for future reference) mine still perfect :D )

This looks like the way to do it...
It's the plungers on the escape and 1 key that need changing and it means I can cut the corner of the frame and I even get a screw mount to help refix it..

So I just need two plungers, a 1 keytop and a D keytop

I did get the ole girl up and running after fitting a new power socket, PL4 and replaced some logic ic's....

Any help to get these parts would be deeply appreciated..
Going to order another RAM/ROM board and an AtomMMC for this baby..

What a lucky point to return to the thread

I have two plungers that you are more than welcome to have. I checked my little stash of spare key tops but I don't have the ones you need :(
