WANTED: Slot-loading CD/DVD (Suit Phoebe case) [Sorted]

Post by IanJeffray » Tue Aug 25, 2020 9:13 pm

Title says it all. I used to have one. I don't know what happened to it (Probably put in a PC then flogged). Now I have a hole to fill. IDE or SATA. Full size 5.25" bay, slot at the top, button at the right (ideally, but could bodge...)

I believe the original Phoebe would have had a Sony CDU771 drive, which do occasionally come up on ebay. It means the light and button will line up without any hacking (other than figuring out how to mount it without the rails). I've never managed to find the DVD equivalent though - would be interested to know if anyone has!

There's a CDU771 available in the states at the moment, expensive postage though:

This CDU571 should also fit (and was listed as to be used in Phoebe by some references): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233505255260?var=0

Thanks both. I was aware that CJE were selling a Phoebe case with a Sony drive not fitted / not confirmed, but hadn't dug up anything more firm to go on than that reference. The Phoebe specs don't state a brand. I'd been looking at Pioneer drives (I had a DVD-104S many years ago) as these look like they may have vaguely fitted -- and my eBay-fu was clearly useless as I'd been searching for any slot-loader for weeks without joy -- knowing the specific model numbers to look for sure helps - I'll grab one!

As for the rails - dang - I'd not noticed that. The Phoebe case I have at least has a floppy drive bracket and I found the perfectly-fitting Mitsumi drive for that. This sounds like a job for Mr 3D Printer! :)

This mentions the Sony CDU571: https://armclub.org.uk/eureka/eureka42.pdf

I have a 571 in my Phoebe case and it lines up correctly. However, as mentioned previously, fixing it in place without the original metalwork is a bit of a pain.

Coo - I'd never seen that before, that's great!

I also recently tripped on this site of the designer of the Phoebe case front....

And seeing the photos there reminded me of some old crap I have... these rails from a PC case I have/had appear to fit the Phoebe case really quite well. We'll see how it works out when the CDROM arrives -- looks like I may need to drill some holes, at least.

So I received the Sony drive. And a visually identical Goldstar one!

The drive rails were drilled and fitted. Needs careful alignment of the slot, but ...

Ian, did you get a Sony CDU771 or CDU571?

I got the CDU571 as per the Phoebe spec. It's really almost impossible to tell the difference from the Goldstar CRD-7161B...
