The Towering Inferno typein listing for BBC Micro

Post by uniforix » Wed Jan 17, 2018 1:27 pm

Hi

Its been "doing my head in", but I remember there being an adventure game type-in in one of the 80s computer mags called "The Towering Inferno", it was in a magazine I didn't really buy so probably bought a one off, initially I was thinking The Micro User, then Your Computer, and then I found there was Games Computing which really sparked some memories when I had a look, but there's only a few copies of that online.

Does anyone on here recall it? I do remember the first page was left side of mag and it had artwork of the Towering Inferno on it, the Your Computer/Games Computing style seems to ring true but it could have been another mag.

Grateful for any ideas? It may be the game is rubbish when I find it, but its just nagging me, always wanted to type it in but I had Electron so never tried (may have run on it, who knows).

Here's a sample of Games Computing, but may not have been this, I had forgotten about this mag though:

Regards

Anthony.

Hi Anthony, You are quite right, it was games computing december 1984

I had the same mag back in the day and typed it in to find alas the electron didn't have a hope of playing a mode 7 game
I wasn't clever enough to convert it to run back then so I gave up but here we are some 34 and 1/2 years later we can successfully run it with ease :)

Most of the Games Computing magazines are on flaxcottage.com.

The December 1984 and February 1984 editions are for sale on eBay at the moment. Here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Games-Comput ... 1431.l2649

Ok here is the finished game, ocr'd/corrected by me and insanely bug tested/corrected by Lee.

You will need beebem v4.03 from http://www.mkw.me.uk/beebem/ to run this properly as it has the acorn speech system implemented and due to licensing issues its missing from the latest version.

Otherwise just delete all the sound statements from the listing and it will run fine on any version/real bbc without crashing

How odd that a text file of the listing is twice the size of the disc image of the same thing?

Just to clarify...
At this stage I have just got the listing to match the magazine listing**. I haven't play tested it or tried to complete the game.
I shall attempt this on Monday.....

Lee
** I did spot one bug in the printed listing, which I corrected...

OK,
I have corrected a couple of bugs and made the game winnable.
Tidied the text up a bit too, and corrected a couple of incorrect connections
I also removed the SPEECH commands as it made BeebEm 4.14 lock up.
You are welcome to try the original version, or, put the SOUND-1 commands back in the corrected version.....

The ssd contains the file O.INFERNO which is the game as close as I can get to the printed listing minus the minimum bug fixing to stop it crashing.
