Ribbon cable for 5.25" dual drive

Post by DavidK » Thu Nov 07, 2019 3:30 pm

Hi All,

The ribbon cable on my Cumana CDX 800S dual drive has a break in it. If I jiggle the cable in to the right position I can get it to work, but would like to replace it with a new one.

I've had a good search on the internet and am struggling to find one that's fit for purpose. I've found one that looks as though it'll do the job, but as it's over in America the shipping costs are prohibitively expensive.

Can anyone recommend a UK seller that would be able to supply a new cable for a dual 5.25" drive?

Cheers

Dave

If you can get hold of a reel of cable, and the connectors, it is fairly easy to make up - I used to use a vice to crimp the connectors, BITD.

Good idea, I've just had a quick search on eBay and the parts seem reasonable enough..

I guess it would be too short to move one of the connectors to the other side of the break. You might get lucky and be able to reuse the existing cable - I have repurposed several PC cables Luke this, but they would have been a little younger ;)

Yeah, the break's pretty much in the middle of the cable. Looking at it, it's had a bit of a tough life, so a nice new one is in order.

I've just ordered all the components from eBay for less than a tenner, and even splashed out on a small vice from Amazon (£4.14).. if I'm lucky enough the vice will stay in one piece long enough to crimp the connectors on :D

Nice...one other thing is to be careful when you cut the ribbon cable as sometimes you get stray wires venturing across to neighbouring wires. I used to cut them with scissors (if I recall correctly), but a good sharp knife is probably a better bet.
Oh, and before you crimp, check, check and check again that the connector is the correct orientation, etc. Once crimped, it is a faff to remove.
