Interesting selection of IEEE488 interfaces. But without power supplies or cheese wedges.

Genuine Acorn laptop... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acorn-W812UI1 ... fresh=true

I remember speaking to these guys when they were just starting out. They weren't sure what I meant when I asked "Does it run RISC OS?"

Could you explain ?
A company bought the rights to use the Acorn brand and logo ? Who sold that ? It's been auctioned or ?

Sorry for the delayed reply. That Wikipedia page seemed to have it well. They simply licensed the brand from a chap / company. The "owner" of the brand waited for the trademark to expire then re-registered it and licenses it out. So this company just bought the rights to use it for a while (and upset an enthusiast with a domain in the mean time I think..!). So its just branded x86 kit. Although I did get a couple of nice acorn branded USB external harddrives which goes nicely with my RPi :D

They are now long defunct. I'm not sure how they intended to convince schools to invest in Acorn branded kit after they'd dumped the technology in favour of x86 tech years before though. Seems like a lot of sales work to me..

I suspect that they saw a potentially profitable brand and didn't think through their approach.

The easier market would have been enthusiasts, where the nostalgia was a selling point. Acorn branded laptops preinstalled with VirtualRPC may have sold OK in some quarters; although, I doubt the market was large enough.

They were a really nice device back in their day, but a bit dated now. However for that price it was an absolute bargain.

It's probably fine - the prophet was an atom with red keys and some extra software. As a prophet 3, this one would have also come bundled with a case and disc drive: http://chrisacorns.computinghistory.org ... phet3.html

Atoms are quite resilient (unless you take an angle grinder to them), so even if it doesn't play ball I'd expect it to be relatively easy to fix.

The only ? is whether it will go superLOL as it's rare (much rarer than a standard atom) or reasonable as people get hung up on an atom looking like an atom, and this looks weird :D

Hi James,

yes, it's an Acorn Atom Prophet 3 all right butwithout extra RAM, utils roms and diskdrive.

Looking at the interior, there's 6KB Userram, 6KB Videoram, 6522 VIA, bus buffers and printerbuffer installed.
The keyboard is a bit different compared to a standard Atom and I guess you need a patched Kernal to use the right keys.

You can find info about the Prophet 2 and 3 here:

Greetings
Kees

The PC equivalent of the A4, may be of use to anyone needing cosmetic case parts for an A4.

Well I guess assuming that the keys fit in the blank positions of the matrix that they could just be read as normal keys with the 8255 (in your code), but yes for them to actually *do* anything by default, you'd need a patched set of roms.

Which of course begs the question are these floating round the net anywhere?

Cheers.

Phill.

That's all they are good for!

BITD work bought two of these and both were utter rubbish. Should have gone for the A4.

Great.

Of course I'm sure you'll check if there are any missing titles for Jon's project

And since the games were newly listed, regularly check if some other ones are going to appear for a fully enjoyable harvest ;-)

Once every 4 or 5 months ...
An excellent business for people who bought stocks at the time when it was sthing like 20GBP per case, I noticed they were on sale at this price in some adverts published in various Acorn magazines.
