For sale: Acorn Electron WiFi cartridges

Post by roland »

I think I am ready to ship the first five boards (however, one is reserved at the moment). The boards will be shipped (almost) completely build and tested. A printed user manual will be included. The cartridge is ready for usage but the LED's are not mounted so you can choose in which orientation you want them soldered on the board. The six LED's will be included in the package.

Before ordering please take note of this:

SECURITY

The Acorn Electron is in no way a secure device, nor is the software for the WiFi module. When using the commands or driver, usernames and passwords may be kept in memory.

COMPATIBILITY

This cartridge is tested with an Acorn Electron and a standard Acorn Plus-1 expansion module. It is also tested with an Acorn Plus-1 and a Pres Plus-1 ROM. Both configurations work perfectly.

Known issues:
  • With a Pres AP6 ROM in a Plus-1 there is a slight corruption on the screen after a hard reset. The cartridge still works as expected.
  • The CPLD is configured to detect whether it is installed in a BBC Master computer. The software is written without using Electron specific hardware and functions so it is expected to work in a BBC Master. However, this is not tested yet.
  • Neither is any compatibility tested with a disc system, the Tube and Econet interface. They probably won’t work correctly together.
  • This board clashes also with the AP5 extension for the Electron as both boards drive (part of) page &FC and page &FD.
  • Not all games are compatible with WiCFS (just like UPCFS). A list of known working games is at: https://www.retro-kit.co.uk/page.cfm/co ... ng-titles/
The price for the boards are €52.50 or £47.90 excluding p&p.

Ok, one reserved for Mark. I added a compatibility issue to the list above, concerning WiCFS. This is not compatible with all games. Thanks to MartinB to remind me about that.

Will the board work without the LEDs being connected, or is it possible for you to mount them on the board before shipping (I'm useless with a soldering iron)?
Are there any plans to have anybody create a case for the board?

Yes, the boards will work perfectly without the LED's. Those LED's are just for a visual feedback so you can see if there is any data transfer and whether the WiFi is enabled or disabled. I can fit those LED's for you (no additional costs!).

The reason that I don't solder the LED's is that there is no case yet. I asked Dave H. to see if he can modify the MGC case for this cartridge and he will when time permits. Also Multiwizard is working on a DIY case without the need of a 3D printer. He is always very creative with normal materials :) So leaving the LED's out in the first place makes it later easier to fit them in the right place on the back (solder) side of the board or facing upward.

Please note that I am willing to order more boards when these five are sold out. It will just take a bit longer for delivery.

If/when they have been confirmed to work in a Master I'd be interested in one as well.

I'll have one, then I do some Plus1/WiFiCart testing as part of the updates I'm doing for Dave H.

But on the flip side, look at all of the cool retro stuff

I’d imagine the first batch are well and truly spoken for now, but if you make some more, I’d like to buy one please, and test it out on the Master.

At the moment all modules are sold out but please keep asking .... I want to know if I have to order 5, 10 or even more additional boards. I already ordered 20 ESP8266 modules  I expect them to arrive in the second week of October. The first five persons who ordered one will get payment information in the next few days.

If it turns out the cartridge also works with the master then I would be interested in a spot on the second batch (or later batch, in no particular hurry). Unlikely to use it much on my Electron as both slots always full with Ap5/6 and Pegasus, plus various companies issues mentioned, but master I always have a free slot, but no free ports.

For members who are interested in using one of these with a Master, this first issue board has some limitations. See here for details.

The topic for Master (and maybe BBC B and B+) discussions is here.

Oh, you've convinced me then! Yes, please. No rush, and we'll have to sort out postage to NZ if you're OK sending it this way. :D

I don't mind sending a packet to NZ. However, the shipment costs are quite high (about €30.00) so if there are more orders from NZ I can combine shipment.

Send it here first, Roland . . . Tracked and signed insured for £50 is only £11.75!

Thanks, roland & dave. We can cross the shipping-to-NZ bridge when we get to it, so give me a prod when we get to that point. But definitely interested (and used to paying $$$s for stuff to get to NZ.)

Hi Roland,

Looks fantastic! Please also put me down for one of these Electron WIFI Cartridges.

I agree there should be an online software archive for this device.

Thanks,
