Sold Out: New ROM / RAM Expansion Board for BBC B

Post by KenLowe » Sun Mar 31, 2019 12:55 am

I have built a small batch of replica IntegraB sideways / shadow / RTC boards for the BBC model B. The board consists of the following:
  • 8 x Expansion sockets for 8k / 16k ROMs. 4 of these sockets can be used for 32k ROMs / write protectable battery backed RAM / EEPROM / Flash / FRAM (banks 8 thru 15)
  • 4 x 16k write protectable battery backed RAM banks (banks 4 thru 7)
  • 20k Shadow RAM
  • 12k Private RAM
  • Y2K compliant RTC
  • IBOS (IntegraB OS) / Basic in a combined 32k EPROM. This uses one of the 32k ROM sockets on the IntegraB board
Installation is fairly straight forward. No soldering required. The 6502 processor needs to be removed from the BBC motherboard, and inserted into a socket on the IntegraB board. The board then plugs into the 6502 socket on the BBC. There are also 3 wires than need to jumper from the IntergaB board onto existing jumper pins on the BBC motherboard, which allows access to the 4 ROM sockets on the main BBC motherboard (banks 0 thru 3). Additionally there are 2 power wires than need to be re-routed from the BBC to the IntegraB, and 2 wires from the IntegraB back to the BBC motherboard.

The board has been tested and will happily co-exist with DFS / Floppy drive / Gotek, Econet, VideoNula, Datacentre, 2nd Processor / Pi Copro, GoSDC / GoMMC, MMFS, BeebSCSI / Winchester HDD, speech synthesiser, various PALPROM solutions (like SpellMaster 128).

Note, however, that the IntegraB will not work with BBCs that have had wiring modifications to accept 32K ROMS / RAM / EEPROM in the 4 ROM sockets. This is because the IntegraB uses some of the same ROM slots that have been assigned to the modified sockets on the mainboard. I recommend that you reverse any wiring mods to the 4 ROM sockets before installing the IntgeraB.

In the first instance, this initial batch is being offered exclusively to Stardot forum members, but in time I do intend to offer them for sale on the facebook group, and more widely on ebay. They will be sold on a first come first served basis, and will be limited to one board per member until I understand what demand is likely to be.

Price for this first batch will be £65 + £5 UK postage, and I will be looking for payment via Paypal gift. I am NOT making any money out of this - just covering costs! The price will likely increase with the next batch as I will need to cover ebay and paypal fees. I may be able to do international deliver, but please contact me for international postage costs.

For this price, you will get the following:
  • IntegraB board as described above
  • 32k PROM pre-programmed with IBOS and Basic. This will be pre-installed in IntegraB ROM socket 15 (ROM banks 14 & 15)
  • User Guide
  • 2 x Self adhesive support strips
  • 40 pin socket extension
  • 3 wire lead to connect between the IntegraB board and the main BBC motherboard
In addition, I also have a small quantity of 32k EEPROM and RAM modules that I can supply with the board. Each additional module will cost £2.50.

If interested, please note interest below, and we can take it to PM for payment and delivery details.

Note that I have had to install 3 patch wires on the rear of the board to fix a couple of routing issues that I picked up during testing. I will post photographs, so it is clear to everyone before purchasing.

I've added a couple of attachments:
  1. PDF copy of the IntegraB manual that will be supplied with the board
    Integra-B User Guide.pdf
    (929.54 KiB) Downloaded 36 times
  2. A zip archive with two disc images...
    IntBEEP.ssd
    (200 KiB) Downloaded 13 times
    • Integra Windows disc image (INTWIN01.SSD). It was originally written by Computech back in the day, and it's a bit buggy, but it gives you an idea of what's possible with the IntegraB.
    • EEPROM utilities disc image (IntBEEP.SSD). These were written by martinb, and he has kindly given me permission to include a copy in this thread. These utilities work perfectly for programming both EEPROM and Flash memory within the IntegraB. The utilities were originally written to support 32k EEPROM module AT28C256, and are discussed in great detail in this thread. I have made a minor modification to the EEPxx utilities to additionally make them compatible with the Flash memory module AT29C256. Instructions for use are included in the User Guide.
I've also included a small utility called RAMSET in this disc image. This is a BASIC program used to tell IntegraB if you have installed RAM into one of the ROM sockets. This will adjust the reported RAM in the boot message, and will adjust the way the *ROMS command reports what is in the socket.
The easiest way to use the SSD images with your BBC micro, is to copy them to USB, and read it in the BBC using a GoTek drive emulator. An cheap alternative is copy to SD card, and use with one of the User Port MMC drive solutions. DataCentre and GoSDC/MMC can also handle SSD images.
For those who want to install a bank of W/P switches in place of the onboard jumpers to protect the contents of RAM / EEPROM / Flash, details are provided in the section 9 of the user guide. I've also attached a schematic showing the recommended wiring. The number of switches used can be reduced, depending on the banks you want to write protect...

Below are a couple of photographs of the board, and associated components...

Unfortunately, it's quite expensive to ship to Australia. The cheapest I can find would be £15 for delivery within 8-13 working days, or £20 for delivery within 4-7 working days. Let me know if you'd like to proceed with either of those options.
Obviously, you'd also be liable for any import duties that might apply.

Thanks
Ken.

Hi Ray. Just to be clear, the board comes pre-populated with 2 x 32k SWRAM modules (banks 4/5 & 6/7). Do you want an extra 32k RAM module in addition to that?

If there's space to get it in the case with an internal DataCentre, then count me in please.

Yes, there's just about space for both. There's almost 11cm of space between the RHS edge of the IntegraB board and the RHS of the case. The DataCentre board is 10cm wide. I have my DataCentre mounted to the lid of the case, close to the right rear and it fits without any clash. I do also have a very small USB stick plugged into the DataCentre, which helps.

I'll put you down as a potential.

Ok. That's four boards shipped today (1/4/19) for all those who have paid. The others who have noted interest, but not paid yet (or anyone else who's interested in one of the remaining 3), please be aware that I will be away from home for a few days from Wednesday. Please pay by lunch time tomorrow if you want me to ship it before I leave, otherwise it will be into next week before I can ship.

Edit: That's another 2 shipped today (2/4/19). Currently none outstanding. I'll leave it exclusive to Stardot for another few days yet, and if no more interest on here, I'll open in up to the Facebook group before then advertising on ebay.

Thanks
Ken.

I’ve received an email from Hermes. I presume that this is the service you used.

@Ken, my board (and extra bits) arrived safely Thursday morning. About six minutes before the email alert from Hermes telling me it would be delivered ‘today’!

For some reason our two dogs keep sniffing it...! Must remember to put it out of their reach.
I won’t have time to play with it this weekend (or next weekend) :(

Thanks for making these and sending them out along with the other bits :D =D>

Lol. I guess that might be to do with having a dog in my house. Although, I promise, he didn't play any part in the building, testing or packing of the boards!!!
