2x non-functional RiscPC mobos - for cost of postage

Post by nudelooney » Sun Oct 29, 2017 5:20 pm

Would anyone like two non-booting RiscPC motherboards? Both have suffered from battery corrosion. One is missing its RTC chip as a result.

Both have VRAM fitted. I'll see what DRAM I can put in them. One has OS3.7, one has OS3.5.

Free to anyone for cost of postage ... or I can bring them to the winter meetup in Leicestershire if you're in no hurry.

Simm sockets: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/connector ... m-sockets/

VRAM will have a check. Depending on how salvageable these are I may start breaking things up...

nice thank you for that. Do you know why the riscpc boards have the angle simm board, assuming the pins align the board any reason why not to replace with a right angle one?

Because the SIMMS won't fit next to each other - just replace like with like :) (Straight up would probably work)

The VRAM socket is a 136way D/SIMM socket. I can't find anything appropriate. I suspect it was rather rare - I can't think of anything else that used something like that myself.... :?

ok, thats what i meant by right angle, right angle to the board, sorry I don't know the conventions on this stuff  .
It's not immediate obvious which ones one RS will fit, tape measure time!

right ordered a couple of the 72pin simm ones, hopefully will come in time for me to bring to abug to fit.
Re. the vram, looking at it, it seems it's only lost the clip on one side, I think it's probably usable.

Good luck! Pictures of how you get on! :) It doesn't need the clip to work at all. Fine without - that just slightly helps in removing the module.

Well if you recall I soldered the new socket in at ABUG, finally had a go this lunchtime with the ram and cpu you gave me. It lives!! :-D

Thanks a million!

That's awesome news! :D Well done! Another RPC back to life! :) Now you just need the ADFS patch installed on an sd-ide HDD, and off you go :)

Daniel,

If your going to end up stripping these non working boards, If one of them is issue 1 could you
remove L13 and tell me if you can see where the pad (nearest the battery) connects to? I have a non
booting PC600 and L13 has lifted next to the battery. Would be nice to see if I can rewire it and
get the board to boot, assuming no other problems....

I need to find someone in the South East with a Risc PC to test some of my cards.

Russ

Hi Russ - just hook it to L11/L12 on the same side, as I said in the facebook thread. Alas, removing it won't show where it's meant to go as it's a multi-layer board and the traces are well buried.

If it's been battery gunked, you really need to check the continuity of all the circuits around there, you can often get hairline breaks between the VIAs and the resistor pack pins which need bridging and will stop the memory behaving. It's laborious work with a copy of the schematic and buzzing out each pin one at a time in the memory circuit, then marking them off.

It's actually still got a 400mb conner drive, that still works.
It appears the machine used to belong to "The Romsey School", there's a bunch of stuff on there, inc students GCSE course work from years ago.
One application I've found is "The Fast Food Diner", from the British Meat Board, given free to schools.
