Weekday 'Virtual' Acorn session #1, Thursday 23rd April 2020, 6pm - 9pm

Post by sydney » Tue Apr 21, 2020 2:20 pm

I know it's really short notice but I'm going to host the first midweek meetup this Thursday the 23rd of April so respond in this thread if you are interested in attending. I've decided on 6pm - 9pm as the running time initially but it may run late if people want to stay.

I'm not sure exactly how it's going to run but from the experience of Saturday last week general chatting about beebs, programming, games, hardware and in fact pretty much anything will be the order of the evening. I've started using gcc to write a text editor so might bore people with that.
I may only have access to zoom via a free account so we could end up having to log out and restart the meeting a couple of time but that shouldn't be a massive problem.
We now have access to a paid Zoom account so the problems with the free version no longer apply. Thanks to those who offered alternatives.
There will be a break from 19:55 to 20:10 to allow those members in the UK to show their appreciation of the NHS by joining in the 'Clap for our Carers' at 8PM.

I'd like to add that I'm not going to advertise the first one on the Facebook group but will for the second one as I'd like to keep it small for my first solo attempt at running one of these.

I'll aim to be there, but I'll probably be joining around 7pm, depending on when the kids are in bed.

I'm planning to convert a PC joystick to work with my Beeb (assuming the replacement DA-15 connector arrives in the post by then).

Count me in!

I'd like to share and get feedback on a proposal for the addition of a 'Stardot News'-type page to the main stardot.org.uk domain - which I've just produced a mockup for (no comments in-thread yet please, I'll create a separate thread if/once I've had a chance to get feedback in Thursday's VABug).

Edit - replaced the mockup with a version that features the 'All News' aggregator as a single column - which I prefer (notes to self: could Twitter serve as the news-posting source ... with certain hashtags from designated Twitter accounts picked up and automatically displayed in the appropriate categories?)

Notwithstanding the no comments in-thread request, the term "rotating banner" left me thinking of old Geocities websites and The Hampster Dance...

Doesn't that time coincide with the clapping for the NHS that has been taking place at 8pm?

Alas, I can't make it for the whole thing as the community choir I attend is on from 7:15 to around 7:50.

I'll be free (EDIT:) before 7:10pm and after 8pm, so I will happily attend for the last hour (and later if it stays on after 9pm).

Ah good spot - I think we can factor a 5-10 min break in around 8pm easily enough for those of us attending in the UK

Is it possible to observe without attending? I've got two webcams I've been trying to get to work with no success, but I'd be happy to just watch other people.

Do you have a smart-phone Jonathan? Works perfectly well on Android/iPhone with the app ...

Count me in please - a 5 or 10 min break at 8 is a good idea. (Did this last week in a similar situation with a book group.)

I'd love to join in please. :)

Should be there from about 7pm onward if that's okay. :D

Edit: If you're interested I can setup a Google Hangouts (actually called Google Meet) using my business G Suite account. That way we can have unlimited call time. It all works in a browser, no software required. All that's needed for participants to join is a web link which we can share. Let me know. I appreciate the last Virtual ABUG was done on Zoom, so if people are already happy with that then that's fine. Just wanted to offer up the option.

(It might be that the Hangouts in GSuite is better, but I tried the consumer Hangouts in a group call last week and it was very poor compared to Zoom.)

I've updated the top post with the names of all those who expressed an interest in attending.
We will definitely be having a break to 19:55 for 10 minutes or so to allow people to take part in the 'Clap for our Carers'.
I have access to a paid Zoom account so the problems caused by the free version now no longer apply. Thanks to gidandridge and markjw for offering the alternatives.

I'd like to attend as well, although I've nothing new to share this time, so I'll mostly just be listening in.

Also looking forward to a demo of LordVaderUK's text adventure.
