Euclid manual

Post by pixelblip » Sun Jan 26, 2020 10:20 am

Hi there
Does anyone know where I might find a manual for Euclid / Ace computing from 1989 please? ( or might you have this in your collections ).
I've hunted for it on the web but had no luck yet.
Thanks

This has been asked for before on here and it illicited no reposnse.

TeeBuoy had one to give away a while ago, amongst a load of stuff. Don't know if a home was found for it. It may have been dumped unfortunately

Hi,

I have a Euclid manual from 1988 that I can scan. Would that be ok?

Ah wow that would be great!
Thanks for getting back to me!
I worked out most of it but I need to fill in the gaps a bit.
Thanks again.

This one? It is dated 1989 - some sticky pages, but all readable. I'm working from home, as most of us do, but allowed back at my workplace one day a week, where we have a good scanner. Can scan sometime next week.

Using the phone does not work that well (thin paper ...), but here is the contents page, in case you need a specific page fast (can do).

Does it contain a description of the file format? It might be useful to update this incomplete sketch with any information the manual contains.

Thanks for scanning and uploading that. :D I'll put a link to it from the file formats wiki. Maybe I'll find the time to update the page with some of the information, too. ;)

That is very interesting! The 1989 version of the manual does not include the extensive description of the file structure that is found in the 1998 version of the manual that Artemis kindly posted! The 1989 version is much simpler ... less details.

It seems the 1988 version was for the Archimedes (according to the manual): RISC OS is not mentioned anywhere.

The 1989 version of the manual does mention RISC OS, so my guess would be that is was written with RISC OS 3 in mind (no version number mentioned anywhere). The diskette with the actual software is dated 1992.

So my 1989 version of the manual might be somewhat useless to you - I just hope the file structure (which is comprehensively documented in the 1988 version of the manual) has not changed!

I'll scan the 1989 manual anyway (as said, sometime next week). Probably best to keep both in the same place :-)

I'm sure any differences in the file format could be figured out. :) I only spent a limited amount of time studying Euclid files before putting them aside to look at other types of file. Having more information available makes it more motivating to return to them.

I'll try and upload some code to read the files somewhere. Apparently, I didn't do that before, only uploading some of my notes to the Archive Team wiki.

Thanks to both Artemis and eelco108 for taking the time to make this information available.

It would also be good to document the other Ace Computing formats, too. :) I started on Ace Film files when looking at Euclid...

I can confirm that Euclid started pre-RISC-OS. I met Tony Cheal at the Personal Computer Show in September 88, and purchased Euclid straight afterwards.

I have been in contact with Tony recently. There is a bug in Euclid when running on emulators.
It's to do with keyframing and Mogul not showing them.
It might mean him having to go back to 30 year old source code. We'll see.
I hope he can solve it as I'd really like to do some animation in it. I'm probably the only person who does though

OK, was back at work today (my one day a week we're allowed to be there ...), so I've scanned the 1989 version of the Euclid manual, even though it does not contain much detail (nothing like the 1988 version). The file is too large to upload, apparently, so I've put it in my dropbox:

I've attached scans of some ACE computing advertising leaflets that came with the software (this file was not too large, apparently).

It was more likely with RISC OS 2 in mind. RISC OS 2 was called RISC OS before RISC OS 3 came out in 1991.

Might well be! I was just guessing :-)
