Exile

Post by trixster »

Hello all,

So why didn't we get an Archimedes version of Exile? The Amiga OCS version was pretty good (even though imo the BBC version is still the best) so I'm surprised a port of that never made it to the Arc.

Can BBC emulators for the Arc or RISCOS platforms run Exile?

Just answered my own question. Yes, with beebit. I can run Exile and Master Elite. Great stuff!

I seem to think one of the developers was sadly killed in a motoring accident.

The two amiga versions are pretty good (i prefer the first ecs version over the aga, the aga version is a bit too zoomed in for me). The C64 isn't bad either.
But the BBC/master version is still the daddy!

There is a playthrough of Exile on Youtube here:

Lets play Exile!

Have a look at his channel too, some nice games on there.

Bit late to reply, but thought I'd add this for historical detail. While I was at Uni (this would have been late 1993 or early 1994 probably), I got involved in work on an Exile port for the Archimedes under Audiogenic - although I have no recollction as to how. Tony Oakden of Quest fame (who did a delightful article in Electron User back in the day) was also slated to be involved and I had a few phone calls with him hashing out how we might divide up the work. After a few months of back and forth with Audiogenic, we were told that the authors (Peter Irvin and Jeremy Smith) just wouldn't hand over the source code - although to be fair I've no idea at all whether there was any truth in that. So the whole idea died at that point as far as I know.

Wow! Thanks very much for the input, that’s super interesting! =D>

I still secretly hope it will see Exile on the Arc, somewhere down the line. It just seems so strange to me that it didn’t happen. We’ve seen PoP and SCR on the Master recently, so who knows! :)

Wait…. What? Can you shed some more light on this? There was an actual working Exile for the Arc?!
It was a hacked version of 65Host with the BBC version of Exile included: see this Usenet post and this follow-up thread.

That's right - I downloaded it, and it worked.

I see the date was 1995. I had a RiscPC by then, and I still have that machine. I can't actually find the hacked Exile on it though unfortunately. I think I must have deleted it when I bought !6502Em, which runs Exile "properly" [in fact not actually any better... but its a full emulator rather than a specialised hack just for Exile]

Interesting. I’ve had Exile running on my A3020 using murklesoft’s 6502Em, the Master (or swarm) version with the extended screen is about 80% full speed on a 24mhz Arm2.
