Homebrew game for BBC and Electron: "Out of this world" - work in progress

Post by 0xC0DE » Sun Jun 09, 2019 9:38 am

WORK IN PROGRESS. Constructive feedback and ideas are most welcome.

No idea in which direction I'm taking this yet. As long as I'm having fun coding it :D
Three design goals:
1. It has to work equally well on BBC and Electron
2. It has to be fun
3. And it has to be challenging

Oh yeah, I'm calling it "Out of this world". It is the classic theme of a space shoot-em-up.

I concur looks very good so far. :) Well done. :)

If not planning on a define keys option (please?) then perhaps consider changing to O/K for up/down and maybe Space for 'fire' , a define option would be neat though if practical. Just thinking here, real machine vs emulation = best choices = user definable.

The odd coloured star may be an idea too, not too many though in colours or it will look similar to other games, perhaps either a random 1 in 100 chance or each 100 one should be a random colour, that type of thing.

How about turning it into a top-down Star Raiders type game? Turn the top down map into a quadrant with edges (probably wrapping around to the other side if crossed?) and fixed size and then a galactic map with quadrants where the enemy are that you need to destroy. Add in limited fuel and maybe energy instead of lives along with places to repair / get more energy. :D
Obviously you would need to be able to rotate and fly in different directions to find and destroy all the aliens in the current quadrant.
Nothing too challenging! :^o

Optimized starfield and made it more varied.
Added some silly animated aliens. They don't really do much right now.
Implemented collision detection between spaceship bullets and aliens.
Keys will probably be redefinable at a later stage but right now it's Z, X, K, M for movement, L for fire, and ESCAPE resets the aliens when they have been killed.
