Game creation software?

Post by BeebSteve » Wed Jul 31, 2019 11:41 am

Hello all,
is there such a thing as game creators on the Beeb? I know such things exist on the Spectrum and C64 but I'm not sure if such a thing ever came out for the BBC and doing a web search doesn't seem to find anything.

I'm asking as I'm looking to do some baby steps into game creation, be-it with a game maker or if not, then basic (as m-code is vastly out of my depth)

So, I'm wondering if such a thing exists?

Thanks all, Steve

GAC (Graphic Adventure Creator) and Quill both exist.

Lardo (edit: corrected madness) was also doing his own version as well.

You sure you aren’t someone else? Was a Freudian Lurkio did most of the posts on the first topic about GAC. Perhaps you can swap names to make my previous post correct? (Okay I edited it, now know one will know)

Lardo is actually a bot written by Lurkio.

Lurkio is an account run by Lardo.

I had an arcade game creator (imaginatively called !Creator) for the Arc and remember them advertising a Beeb version but I think it's been lost.

There was a collection of Electron User programs advertised in the Micro User that called itself the "Arcade Game Creator" - it's more a collection of routines/demo programs than a complete system but might be useful. And there were a few series on writing arcade games in the magazines by Kevin Edwards, Roland Waddilove and Eric Crisp.

I've never used it but there's also Repton Infinity which has its own built-in game editor and language (REPTOL) which can be used to write new games.

Kees (oss003) having made the compiler and runtime for the Atom for AGD and converted loads of games is now working on the beeb version of arcade-game-designer

If should require any assistance with Quill (I realise probably not as you said arcade games!) please feel free to grab me via a topic and I'll try to assist. Specifically in cases where you're trying to convert an existing game from one platform to another as there are quite a few pitfalls in this.

GAC is quite good to be honest, however it does lack memory given the fact that you're involving graphics too.

EDIT... Not important but I don't have time/energy to read every topic, so if there was an "adventure creation" thing I am happy to provide feedback etc etc (If I can help I always will!) but I may need a PM or something to tell me about said topic. Having said that there are a *lot* of very highly capable people on here, my erm 'area' is conversion of them from one platform to another really rather than "best way to do xyz"

Having said the above AGD is quite good but I've not got to grips with it yet. Not this one anyway, take a look at the platforms. I can confirm it worked OK for the Amstrad and I almost got the ZX one working but that's an emulation issue. I say worked OK as in I got it fired up via emulation and was able to define control keys and start the game, albeit without any other proper game data! :D

I was not really sure what to do with the 6502 assembly output to assemble it externally then load it though for this platform. ahem

Its more a question of finding time, something that I never appear to have any of :(

Lets just be slightly thankful that some of the 'creation' tools from B.I.T.D for other platforms never made the hop across to this platform. To be fair some were half decent but a few were really bad (imo) at that time when they were new. :D
