author name correction

I just thought I'd point out that Get Set Santa by S. Martin (http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1410) is very obviously by the same author as Super Digga by Steve Martin (http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1583), seeing as the screen layout in the screenshots is identical (including author attribution).

It would probably be better to change "S. Martin" to "Steve Martin" so that you get both of those games when you click on the author's name from Get Set Santa: under the present arrangement you get a mixture of games by S. E. Martin and you don't find Super Digga at all.

Hi Joachim,
Trying to sort out the authors is a bit of a pain!
In this instance, we have games by:

S. Martin: "Get Set Santa" from Electron User
Stephen Martin: "Digga" from Electron User and "Invasion Force" from Electron User
Steven Martin: "Super Digga" from Electron User
S.E. Martin "Bridge To The East" from Ixion Software and "The Avaunting" from Ixion Software.

I am inclined to say the author of "Digga", "Super Digga" and "Get Set Santa" are almost definitely the same person.
I would say there is a high probability that person is also the author of "Invasion Force".

I am not so sure "S.E. Martin" of Ixion software is the same person.

What do you think??

Lee.

I have updated the author info.
As it stands, if you search for "Steven Martin", or "Stephen Martin" you will get the 4 Electron User Games.
If you search "S. Martin" you get the 2 Ixion Software games.
If you search "S Martin"you get all 6 games.

I am not entirely sure this exact search behaviour is as I expected.
I expected "Steven Martin" and "Stephen Martin" to return the games that I attributed to him.
so "Ste Martin" will also return his games as will "St Martin"
"S Martin" also returns the 2 games I have attributed to "S. Martin" (First name unknown).
BUT, I expected "S. Martin" and "S Martin" to return all 6 games as I was under the impression that non-alphabetic characters were stripped before the search.
I will speak to Paul about this.

Great! I didn't notice there was "Stephen Martin" as well but what you've done sounds exactly right.

The only thing that could possibly be better is assigning each author an ID number and page so that the user can distinguish between people with potentially similar names, as everygamegoing tries to (http://www.everygamegoing.com/egg/landi ... %20Martin/): but that wouldn't magically give us a source of reliable data, so it might just become another way to propagate errors.

That's the problem! It's difficult to be sure your data is correct.

If you spot anything else that needs tweaking, please let me know.

Wrong. If you search for "S. Martin", you get the two Ixion games.

Not quite. If you search for "S. Martin", you only get the two Ixion games.

Is this behaviour correct?

EDITed following Lee’s edit (above).

They already have an ID number (As does everything - publishers, genres etc.) so authors are assigned to games. They don't have a page though. For most authors it would be difficult to think what to put on it, apart from a list of their games, which you can already (pretty much) do by searching.
