Ok I am stopping until I get a definitive answer as to what to do.
Got discs 91 to 95 done with Bem but each shot is 942K.
Got disc 91 done with beebem at 640x512 each shot is about 5 to 8K

640x512 on beebem:

1280x1024 scaled down to 640x512 on beebem:

I think the second image looks better. I've not seen any b-em images to compare so if you have a similar screengrab could you post it then we'll know which way to go.

If you zip up the images from b-em and email them to me I'll see if I can reduce the file size as I downloaded a batch image manipulation tool when I first looked at this.

Data point, my b-em 640x512 images are usually under 10k.
Are they actually BMPs just with a .png extension?
I can't remember which emulator had which settings, but i think they both have s few.

Yep .bmp with a .png extension! :D
I started with default settings as that is what Paul said to use, but they are rather large...

I have got the release type working on my laptop. I wanted to add a column to the game table, and add another table for descriptions, but the user I am using to connect doesn't have these privileges, which is probably wise as I am using the website user. Can you either give me a user with better access, or run the following to create the structure required:

Code: Select all

alter table games add column ( reltype char(1));

create table reltype (
  id char(1),
  name varchar(255)
);

ALTER TABLE `reltype`
  ADD UNIQUE KEY `id` (`id`);
Thanks

Hi Simon,
Not sure they were on the list!
All the text adventures were on discs 91 to 100.
There are about another 80 random Mode 7 games/ bad screen shots on my list that I will do today if possible... them I will upload them all together.
If anyone notices any other bad/incorrect screen shots then let us know!

Here's some more fixes - mostly strange rez games - like Boffin - it has some really wide rez I don't think I've seen in any other game...

Arcadians
Boffin
Contraption
Nutcraka
Qwak
Sentinel
And
Shoveit

Cool.
I have re-taken the rest of the Mode7 and the dodgy shots and will email them to Simon when I get home, and then upload the lot.

2 games I had problems with were "Curse of the Middle Kingdom" and "Lords of Time" on discs 59 and 98 respectively.
Curse would not load on B-Em (Disc changed error) but did on BeebEm.
And Lords of Time would not load on B-Em, it just crashed out, but loaded on BeebEm..
These need looking at.
I will try them on the real beeb tonight.
Could someone else confirm the problem please.

Lee.

Yep. Will do Richard, but the idea of these games is that they just work, whether it is on a real beeb from disc, from Datacentre, or from BeebEm, B-Em, or JSBEEB.
It's a lot to check! But most have already been checked and are fine :D

I only meant to get the screenshots done, making the games compatible, or fixing the emulators are also good goals.

Aah!
Well I *think* most of the dodgy ones have been re-done now.
I will upload them all tonight when I get in.
Then it's up to eagle eyed people to spot errors....

You have mail Simon!

***Simon - take particular notice of Curse of the middle kingdom - I did that one with Beebem and may not be as good.

The database is designed to take more than one screenshot per game, so I did the following (The screenshot used is the one with the lowest "main" number). It would be worth checking that I haven't messed up. If you click on a game to get into the detail screen you can change the gameid number after the ? to the one below. I think there was a typo in Micro Olympics, so I corrected that, and I already had a better screenshot for 1984 so uploaded that.

Code: Select all

update screenshots set main = 9000 where gameid in (1838, 248, 1894, 1907,1918 ,1937 ,1954 ,1966 ,1973 ,1974 ,1977 ,1986 ,1987 ,1997 ,1999);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1838 ,'DISC103-BrightEyes.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (248 ,'DISC014-MicroOlympics.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1894 ,'DISC106-CityDefend.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1907 ,'DISC106-SoccerSupremo.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1918 ,'DISC107-JR.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1937 ,'DISC108-MastermindGamesPack1.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1954 ,'DISC109-GoldenShot.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1966 ,'DISC110-Dicer.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1973 ,'DISC110-StarTrekTheGame.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1974 ,'DISC110-Strategy1.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1977 ,'DISC110-Timetrek.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1986 ,'DISC111-StarTrekRH.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1987 ,'DISC111-Strategy2.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1997 ,'DISC111-WorldCupManager.png',100);
insert into screenshots (gameid, filename,main) values (1999 ,'DISC112-SecretDiaryOfAdrianMole.png',100);
I also imported the release type which is on the game detail page, and added a play button to that page while I was there. Next I need to try to get my head around the genre and release type search!

EDIT: These are the screenshots from resized.zip posted by sydney. I see I have a number posted since that need to be taken care of. Tomorrow!

Cheers

I think Simon is having his birthday as he hasn't sent me the re-jigged screenshots back yet.

Just tried Curse of the middle Kingdom and Lords of Time on the real beeb and both work with DTRAP set on datacentre (as stated on the menu) but they do need investigating why they crash on the emulators....

Lee - you have mail!

I think the site is absolutely fantastic! When I was doing the screengrabs the other night it was a case of click on the game, click download, click open in beebem and I was away! My laptop isn't up to running jsbeeb but there really isn't much difference when the game loads instantly into beebem.

I've updated my best games list and Jason mentioned that a 'Top 50' section on bbcmicro.co.uk might be a good idea. Certainly it might help those new to the beeb get a good idea of what the beeb can do and avoid some of the less playable games out there.
Also what do people think about a 'Random Game' button?

Here are the screenshots that I did and Simon has ensmallened :D

EDIT by sydney: I removed the attachment and uploaded a new one later in the thread.

Along with the ones Simon did himself, that should be the majority of the bad ones eradicated :D
