But I think we need something more interesting.

Hmmm...

The other one looks like an Omnidirectional Pacman. ;)

(Which is not a criticism, honest!)

Stardot logo

Post by Samwise » Mon Aug 30, 2010 10:37 pm

OK,

After a bit of considering, I think there's a definite need for a new topic to discuss new logo ideas as there's clearly interest from several ppl in having a go at it and I still believe it's better if we keep such things out in the open.

I'll move the other logo-related posts into this topic, and anyone who wants to can contribute proposals here. So let's let this one run for a while too, and see what comes up.

The brief such as it is, is that we need a basic logo to start with. Lion's latest banner efforts look very sparkly - almost angelic, even. :) But the first thing we need is a simple logo - something that will look recognisable as a favicon.ico, but can also scale up to made into a bigger banner, for integration into a theme later down the line. The Retro Software logo does well in this regard, I think, and is nice and clear, even at favicon.ico size.

The only discussion I've had with Arcadian was that we both thought that some variation on the MODE 7 "*." would probably look cool - and that seems to be the route that Lion has evolved his design from. But happy to leave the goal open and just see what some of our talented bods come up with.

It's probably also worth drawing attention to the point that attempts based on the words "stardot" might be difficult to scale down to a recognisable favicon.ico.

@Test Pilot Monkey, I like how clean and simple your suggestion is, but my only concern is that it's a bit /too/ similar to the existing company. The further away we can keep from that as possible, the better ...

Cheers,

Sam.

haha, I'm only just beginning to notice that everyone round here seems to think Electron users are inherently angry. :)

Do I just not know enough them? Are they generally grouped as an angry mob? :)

On a more serious note, I only mentioned it because we both came up with the same thought - as, indeed, did you. So there's probably something in it.

I think we can afford to be less stringent when it comes to the graphics side of things, as there's no big stress revising them at a later date. Though it would be nice if we could settle on a base logo that we can retain for the long-term. Our roots are an 8-bit community and we still predominantly are, so I don't see an issue reflecting that in the logo, even if we do potentially host more information and downloads covering the 32-bit side later.

If someone wants to come up with a logo that also covers all the Acorn machines, like the name, then that'd be interesting, tho. I have no idea if there's been a MODE font which has gone all the way from the Atom to the BBC Micro/Electron or even RISC OS. Maybe someone else who knows better will comment?

There was always that Jafa Systems Mode 7 Display Unit add-on for the Electron to supply MODE 7, of course. So I wonder if it isn't the Atom crowd that would have the most right to complain about a MODE 7 style logo. :)

Mode 7 actually looks different on the Arc, but I think the Mode 1 font is the same everywhere. (Except that on most Arc monitors, it is squashed.)

But come on, the Mode 7 font is cooler. :)

heh.

I wouldn't disagree, and I think the *. or >*. of your current efforts is definitely the sort of thing I first had in mind. Though it will be good to see what else comes up.

The other advantage to a MODE 7 font is that it's also well known to anyone who's used the old analogue teletext on a TV, as well as just beeb owners.

I had a look at testpilotmonkeys dot with a star:

But it looked too much like a flower - or Ariel Automatic.

EDIT: And this didn't work either....

I was thinking about double-height mode 7 just this morning.

I think I'm a little disappointed to learn that it really is just the same font, but doubled in height. I somehow always imagined that it was a separate font.

That's fine, but we need a logo that we can use as a favicon and put on "Sophie says We're Sad Muppets" T-shirts, CDs of samwise singing, copies of "The Thoughts of Chairman Moore" and so on.

So it's got to be something that is or contains within it something bold enough to work in a favicon.

I doodled loads of designs last night and now, duly educated about favicons (damn those favicons ), I can see that none of them are suitable #-o

I liked this and was going to colour it in but I guess I won't bother now

That's awesome, Martin. :)

I was trying to avoid using any imagery that might possibly have a copyright claim over it, though I don't know whether I'm being overly paranoid or not.

Too right, I got assaulted by one loon at Bletchley - I was just walking past their stand and he grabbed me .....

"Do you know what this is ?" he said, pointing rabidly at a tiny circuit board.

"No" I replied sheepishly.

"It's a BeagleBoard", and he burbled on for 5 minutes before I could edge away to the RetroClinic display.

Quite frightening, I wake up in the middle of the night now shouting "It's a BeagleBoard", and the Mrs has to make me a horlicks and give me my teddy before I can get back to sleep

So next time take a piece of circuit board you've taken to with a blow torch, and say "seeing as your into electronics, could you help me fix this ?". Then hand it over, give him nightmares.

As for logos, well I've been under a pile of electronics converting junk into working hardware. The TV I've dubbed A2 is next, seeing as I finally have all the parts.
