Layout trouble: wrapping of long topic subtitles

Post by BigEd »

Having recently updated my browser - Chrome - I'm finding that longer topic titles (actually, see below, long subtitles), when they belong to multi-page threads, are formatting very poorly. (I'm now running version 89.0.4389.82 (Official Build) (x86_64).)

Two examples visible here:

(I appreciate that the forum software is complex and not something we'd want to customise.)

Latest Firefox (86.0) is fine:

In (a very old) Safari all is well:

I see that if I have the screen set to zoom in (eg 125%). At 100% it looks normal.

Yes, I probably have a narrow setup, relative to font size, compared to many. But chrome can pretend to be an ipad, and that has the problem, even in landscape orientation.

Looks like the problem is when "left-box" of a multi-page thread needs to wrap (that's the long line of description below the topic title) - at that point, "pagination" seems to grab the vertical extent of the containing thing - which might be "row" or might be "row-item".

I'm suffering the same now on my Android phone. It makes it pretty hard to use the forum. Have we worked out if Chrome or the sites cxs is at fault? I coyote message take a look later

Just sneaked a quick look and I have a quick "fix" no guarantee that this won't break other stuff but it might be worth a punt as the site is more or less unusable now on my phone.

Either: remove "float: left" from the .left-box style
Or: remove the "left-box" style from the topic-poster divs altogether
Or: add $("DIV.topic-poster").removeClass("left-box") somewhere on page as a bodge?

I'm sure a better css coder will be along to tell me that there is a better way but that is my 5 minute solution.

Oh, that's good - a small change, and to CSS, which is defined in the theme. We already have a pair of themes, it seems, so our beloved board admins must already be comfortable with a quick copy-and-tweak.

Can people check if this is working properly now? I went and got my hands dirty under the bonnet....

excellent - worked for me when I changed board preference (board style), from prosilver muted edits to ordinary prosilver.

(also I cleared the browser cache)

many thanks!

Worked for me too, like BigEd I found I had to change the board style as well before it came into effect.

Also noticed this. I normally use Opera but had to switch to Edge. The issue is still there, at 100% zoom level.

Check the theme you're using and delete any cache, then force refresh the page. Edge and chrome use the same rendering engine so if fixed on chrome it should be OK on Edge!
