Slow seems a little bit tedious to me... medium speed might be better perhaps?

Also, not sure whether we should play in high-res or low-res mode - it's a very different game.

The STH version seems to have a bit of a bug when running on my Master, that every time you complete a level you lose a life which is then put on the screen as an extra spaceship (?) - doesn't seem to happen with the version in this thread under emulation, though.

I tend to agree with the tedium of Slow.... why don't we start on Medium and gauge it from there?

Does anyone know if, as you advance, this will click into Fast speed?

In which case I would suggest starting on slow and progressing up from there.

Also, I personally preferred the low res option, but the majority should decide...

From the screenshot this looks very similar/identical to 'Bug blaster' (I think the name is correct?) which I played BITD...?

Ok Folks, just so we don't waste time trying to decide what to do, let's follow Fwibbler's lead. He chose the game so I'm making a management decision so we can get on with playing the game rather than deciding how to play it.

Thanks,

Ed......:-)

edit: Yes, forgot to say - Low Res, Slow Speed....

I also started with the low res and slow options. This was my first ever go at this game, I never saw it BITD. It's not as smooth as Bug Blaster but there's more going on, and it gets fun as things speed up... 67,750

Anybody notice there seems to be 2 spellings for this game.... Spectapede and Spectipede....I think it depends on what screen you're looking.

I'm having a few problems:

First I didn't read the whole post and ran medium, high and played for ages.
The I tried low, slow, but b-em wouldn't let me press (S)low.
I have tried many times on Beebem and it keeps crashing after a couple of minutes.
Has anyone managed to run it successfully on windows, latest beebem or b-em?

Ok, here we go....good news, bad news, good news, bad news (sounds familiar)...

Good news - my score improved
Bad news - it's not even close to a good score
Good news - there is still lots of time
Bad news - it probably won't help

This may be my choice of game, but I still seem to be crap at it compared to the rest of you guys!
My first attempt tonight, though I hope to do better...

OK, worked out why I couldn't press S, I had the CTRL/CAPLOCK<->A/S turned on on b-Em.
78820 first try low/slow, 50 points less than my only go on high/medium.
I did get see a couple of bugs, one was I shot a falling thing and it stayed displayed (left of the spider) but it didn't stop more falling, the other was a nuisance, I shot a falling mushroom and it stopped (again didn't stop more falling) and stayed displayed and bouncing the centipede and I couldn't shoot through it (didn't get points for hitting it again). These didn't really effect my score, that was more affected by me "collecting" falling things instead of shooting them!

The game does seem to be more unstable than I remember.
Its crashed twice on me now (once when I had a really high score (well, for me anyway!))
I'll keep at it. :D

Well it's not Bugblaster, as I played BITD, but it gets fun when things start moving quickly. :)

Definitely a few bugs going round here - lost my 2nd last life the second I started a level, before I could move, I think a new mushroom-thing had appeared on top of me...?

A small improvement (playing by the rules, but see below...): 71,130.
spectapede2.jpg
I was experimenting a bit with this game, and found it's possible to use points farming get a very high score - by avoiding the centipede and focusing on the endless supply of spiders, birds, and worms for bonuses. Then I found another bug... An extra life is given every 10,000 points, but when I got to 100,000 points I was awarded hundreds of extra lives...

I get the weird Basic error message in Beebem. Seems to work in B-em, though.

Best score so far, not surprised to read about bugs in the game (not the intended ones!) Mastertronic games on the BBC in general were of a poor standard and many were barely worth the 1.99 paid for them, even when they had a good game - Kane - they messed it up by missing off 2 levels. That said their games on other platforms were excellent, especially on the C16, where Spectapede was a totally different game, much better than this poor excuse for a game.

OK, got to 99980 and lost my penultimate life (EDIT: lost about 4 lives pressing print-screen as I got closer to 100000).
Image
Then it went screwy, same as chrisn and after a good run, its hard to be sure, but I think I lost my last real life at 145600.
Image
It has now been running in the background for about 15 minutes and hasn't run out of lives yet.

As much of the game handler is in BASIC (although heavily 'compressed' BASIC by the looks of it...), and we have over a week left - I wonder how difficult it would be to fix the "overflow at 100,000 points" bug?
