Season 4 Games Submissions

Post by KarateEd » Wed Nov 05, 2014 8:21 am

Hi Folks,

Ok, it's time to start putting together next season's game list.

If you chose games from last season and it did not get played, feel free to re-enter it for submission for Season 4.

Please only submit Three games for consideration.

You will have until Saturday evening 9:00 PM November 15th. At that point any submissions date stamped after that will not be considered. I need the time to get the games set up, the page, etc, etc.... I know, excuses....

If there is a game from previous years (season 1 or 2) that you fancy (and that's been played), you may make one of your 3 picks that game. The other 2 must be games that have not been played yet. This will help keep the Challenge fresh, learn and play new games, and still allow us to revisit those 'special' games.

Choose well with the idea the game will be interesting to your fellow challengers and will also be a .....well....challenge!

Thanks everybody and if you have anything to add, kindly do.

Ed......:-)

Crumbs, where has the time gone? I missed making submissions last time, want to be better this time, but don't want to pick any old thing. Not that anything I pick will stop me featuring at the lower end of the table ... :-({|=

Zany Kong

Impact! (the break-out clone from Gary Partis IIRC ... not that I'm very good at it, but just tried this and Arkanoid and sucked even more at Arkanoid!)

A.N.Other ... :-k Would like a blaster but not everyone's cup of tea! (I liked Swarmer's Revenge from Beebug but even I can play that for quite a while, so would bore other people senseless) ... so still thinking!

OK, let's try Jet Boot Jack ... just cos I used to play it BITD.

Hmmm, lets see.....

Pipemania
Spectipede
Jet boot jack

I seem to recall tha Spectipede may have ahada bug in it that allowed points whoreing, but haven't been able to replicate it recently.
So if anyone objects to it then,

Cops 'n' Robbers :D

I haven't chosen my games yet, but was wondering if you think my AstroBlaster game would be OK. I am still tweaking the layouts of the "rocket" type waves and still hope to get a few secret bonuses in.

Current notes:

Astro Blaster

Z – left, X – right, RETURN – fire, SHIFT - warp

Astro Blaster is nearly as complete as it is going to be.

WARP slows down the aliens for 10 seconds, but can only be used once before needing to be recharged by flying through the fireball storm.

In the arcades, the fireball storm is an asteroid field with occasional fireballs, followed by a sequence where you dock with your mother ship to refuel, this will have to wait for an extended version on a beeb with more than 32KB as I have none left on a Model B.

There are a couple of waves where the four aliens should follow each other instead of moving in a synchronised way, but having no memory left, this will also have to wait for an extended version if I ever feel inclined to make it.

Astro Blaster is a big game, it has over 70 waves, 32 attack patterns and 40 aliens over 7 sectors in the arcades with an eighth unreachable sector 8, I have included this although I am not good enough to get that far.

There are some waves where a row of aliens fly diagonally down that should not come back for further passes, but I haven't stopped them yet.

The main distinguishing feature of the arcade version is speech, this would need much more RAM and CPU cycles too. If I ever write the extended version, I may add some speech. The other main missing feature are the “secret bonuses”, these also require too much memory to add to the current version.

@ Tricky - Master 128, Master Compact and 2nd processor improved / extended versions of good games are desperately needed

Think of all that non-productive RAM that is just sitting there waiting for a good game...

Hi Tricky,

I absolutely think it would be awesome. It's a great game that requires a skill level, not just mindless hammering of the keyboard so I'm all for it.....

eeek, didn't realise the cut off was today

off the top of my head:

1) Danger UXB
2) Dare Devil Denis
3) Rubble Trouble

I'm not sure if any of these have been played before (I haven't played them, but I know I missed some rounds, especially early on). If they have, and you need another choice then let me know.

I put the notice out 10 days ago (Nov 5) so people would have enough time to think about their choices and be able to get them in. It's just that I need to be able to post everything and I need the time for that. Hope that's ok timewise.

Times Up folks for submissions

Cutoff is here!
Thanks to all that have submitted so far.... =D> =D> =D>

Now, just to be clear, if anyone has a valid reason why they couldn't submit something within this time frame, please PM me and we'll certainly consider putting your picks in the mix but I think 10 days notice should be enough.

If you would like me to have you do submissions in a different way, please, let me know. I'm open to suggestions all the time on how to run this thread. I'm by no means the expert when it comes to this, I'm just trying to allocate my time which due to some other things (ukulele performances actually) has become really constrained.

Thanks folks.....

I will post the Season 4 results in a new thread shortly.....

Here is the version of AstroBlaster for the hi-score challenge, there are still a few things I would like to change, but probably won't get a chance before the end of season 4.

Current notes (mostly repeated from above):

Astro Blaster

Z – left, X – right, RETURN – fire, SHIFT - warp

I'm pretty sure that the joystick code will work, but uses the second fire button to WARP. Unfortunately, I only have one button and can't test it!

Astro Blaster is nearly as complete as it is going to be, I have found a few bytes, so still hope to add a few bits, but not in the next few months.

WARP slows down the aliens for 10 seconds, but can only be used once before needing to be recharged by flying through the fireball storm.

In the arcades, the fireball storm is an asteroid field with occasional fireballs, followed by a sequence where you dock with your mother ship to refuel, this will have to wait for an extended version on a beeb with more than 32KB as I don't have enough memory left on a Model B.

There are a couple of waves where the four aliens should follow each other instead of moving in a synchronised way, but having no memory left, this will also have to wait for an extended version if I ever feel inclined to make it.

Astro Blaster is a big game, it has over 100 waves, 32 attack patterns and 40 aliens over 7 sectors in the arcades with an eighth unreachable sector; I have included this although I am not good enough to get that far.

I have added a limit on the number of times the diagonal aliens fly past, but some of those waves still require a WARP to make a safe passage.

The main distinguishing feature of the arcade version is speech, this would need much more RAM and CPU cycles too. If I ever write the extended version, I may add some speech. The other main missing feature are the “secret bonuses”, these also require too much memory to add to the current version.
