First of all, a link to flibble's excellent hints and tips from season 1:
Linky

I've had two goes so far tonight, the first time I've played since Wakefield (edit: Just realised I played a few games in Blackpool!). My first go scored me 857 points and my second got me 1257, slightly less than I scored in season 1 and about a third of flibble's final score.

A long way to go yet!

Two goes ever I think - I don't remember playing at Wakefield and am a bit busy with Phoenix ;)
They seem generally disappointed in me for some reason!

I take it 394 is not too good then, I guess I should read the season 1 post ;)

Flibble and I had a face off right at the end of Wakefield. Flibble won. :D

394 is pretty good for your second go. Read the hints and tips and you will definitely improve!

It's a repeat, but it's one of my favourites, so it's OK :)

749

Nasty ending here, as two enemies converged on me, and both started firing plasma bolts, causing my shields to die. Ship blew up before I had a chance of ejecting...

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but anything over 100 points per mission and they will be happy with you, and definitely let you continue. If you score less than 100 points, then it kind-of depends on what mood they're in as to whether they retire you or not.

Damn... was doing really well here, 607 points on the first command! Then I got hit with a huge plasma stream at point-blank range, killing my shields and blowing me up before I had a chance to stab the exit button. Perhaps I need to be a little more eject-happy.

That's a bit more like it. Got to command 8 this time, easily beating my score from last time we played.

This is a truly disappointing result, however, I want to get on the board just so it seems like there are a few players.....of which I'm really not one for this game.....so much to learn how to do, so little time.....

Finding it a little difficult to get the hang of this one... is it easier with dampers on/off? or large/small torpedoes? and the key layout is rather 'unique'...

I always play with dampers on. The first thing I do is press f0 & f1. You then don't have to worry about 'straightening up' your ship after turning. Large or small torpedoes? I'm sure the instructions say it doesn't matter but I think it actually does. Always use large torpedoes for you and small for enemy. Once you get used to it the key layout is really good, my only problem is that the shield controls are right next to the escape capsule controls so I've had a few unintentional exits!

As for the scores, I think pretty much all the scores so far are pretty good. My first submission in season 1 was 418 so your are only a few points behind this and I finished on over 1600. Flibbles hints and tips really are worth reading!
flibble wrote: 1) If you haven't already, hit f5 to enable 'large starship torpedos'
2) You absolutely need to be using some manual shield control. The energy regeneration rate is significantly higher with the shields off
2.1) flip between 'off' (V) and 'auto' (C), ignore 'on' (B)
2.2) You can turn the shields off at any point someone is not firing at you, e.g. them flying away or shooting but the bullets haven't reached you yet.
2.3) Other things that effect regen rate include firing (only fire when you've a realistic oportunity of hitting something), turning and thrusting. Sitting completely still with the shields off recharges the energy very quickly.
3) There's no need to change to a newer ship until you're in big trouble. Each level seems to have a harder set of bad guys and it's quite possible to score over 1000 points on the first command!
4) You don't need to move forward that much, most of the time I'm sitting in the middle spinning round, forward is used to dodge rapid firers/plasma firers that are shooting at you from the sides. When dodging, vary your speed as this significantly messes up their aim, allowing you to escape a lot of damage.
5) If a rapid firer is within a tight cone directly in front or behind you, it can be very tricky to dodgy. As Sydney mentioned driving into them is an entirely reasonable tactic.

Nice choice to start the season - Starship Command is my favourite Beeb game. :-)

I just scored 3150 and the star fleet authorities are said to be "displeased" I got to over 3000 on the first stage, after that level 2 and 3 were much more difficult.

Went really well this go - could do nothing wrong on the first command for ages, and just kept racking up the points. It was getting late, though, and eventually I just lost concentration and got blown up before I escaped. Didn't even get to command 2!

Well, a slight improvement.

I see what others are saying, once you get a 'better' score, it seems like the whole galaxy is out to get you.....

Here's an obscure hint - if you turn the shields off, then you can see the cloaked aliens on the short-range scanner.

Sorry, posted this to the old thread, thanks JoolsH for spotting it.

Turning the shields off when not needed makes a huge difference, my third go ever and I got 518, but now I just turn the shields off every time someone shoots at me and I can't get over 50!

Think this is my best score ever for this game, seem to be getting the hang of it this time.

Just had a go on an emulator and scored 900 on command 1 but my escape capsule collided with an enemy ship. I've always thought I was better on real hardware than on an emulator but this beats my best 'command 1' score by quite a way. While playing I realised that on real hardware I'm sat upright at a table fully concentrating on what I'm doing whereas under emulation I'm generally slouched on the sofa with half of one eye on the tv and half of the other on the kids - no wonder I struggle to play! I think I'll set the laptop up on the table later and see what happens. Don't think I'll be anywhere near 3000 though!

A little better. Got 1900 on the first command here.

Panic-ejected on command 3 and collided with an enemy ship :(
