Am intending to get a score in, but having PC problems at home, so might end up being a bit last minute.

I don't know the game, so I don't have enormous hopes for table-topping action.

Anybody got any tips on how to avoid the red things? as soon as they appear they smash into my craft no matter where I am or whats happening, therefore the second these things appear my game is over, hence my scores not getting any higher.

By red things, do you mean the heat seeking missiles? If so then...

... when you travel always do so at a high speed. Then, as soon as they appear, double back to get them off the screen and they should disappear.

Or, if you have a long way to travel, don't slow down and let it follow you. That way you know there won't be another one blocking your path because they generally only appear one at a time. Once you've arrived, quickly turn around and go back a short distance, enough to get them off the screen and they should disappear.

Nice little game just a bit frustrating at the moment !

High Score Table Updated.....and......same leader........

I'm starting to figure some things out so a slightly higher score.....I think you have to go only so far on each level to score max points.....

Getting away from the x-wing is not easy....I can't do it.....yet.....but it's starting to come.....saw the missiles from the tanks.....kinda interesting in that war zone.

Anyway, a new one for me.....and on my Beeb, too......53,990

Flibble's advice is probably needed! In my case, I'm firing continuously and bobbing up and down as I go - hardly the most scientific approach. I've not figured out a guaranteed way to rid myself of them, nor to avoid them when landed! Trying to shoot or bomb them has so far been met with mixed results, though predominantly mixed with a tendency towards failure.

To avoid the red things (gyrocopters) (at least during long transit runs back to the hospital from a far house) my best tactic is to fly just above the level of the houses.

They always appear at the top of the screen coming from the direction you're heading in, and can't get down low enough to you by the time you pass.

Still when you're picking people up from the the houses it's pretty much down to luck and maybe a snap-movement to get out the their way or their bombs way.

Incidentally flying at the rooftop height proves a distinct disadvantage when the surface to air rockets start (after gyrocopters, after killer satellites). I still haven't really come up with a tactic to deal with that.

Many thanks for all the pointers, it really does make a difference flying lower and quickly when the gyrocopter type thing appears, as you can see a much improved score.

I have discovered you can carry a maximum of 16 people at once.

I'm trying that again, having discounted it last time because I'd been flying too low (just beneath the ridge level of the roofs) and found the tanks' shells could reach me. I've now increased the altitude a touch (and don't know quite why I'm talking flight-sim language).
They always appear at the top of the screen coming from the direction you're heading in, and can't get down low enough to you by the time you pass.
I'm still testing this, but your scores indicate that you're probably correct!
Still when you're picking people up from the the houses it's pretty much down to luck and maybe a snap-movement to get out the their way or their bombs way.
The bombs seem to have to be a direct hit on you, whereas I'm not so sure for the craft themselves (or maybe that's because the explosion seems slightly smaller than the craft and is centred around its own centre rather than the point of impact).
Incidentally flying at the rooftop height proves a distinct disadvantage when the surface to air rockets start (after gyrocopters, after killer satellites). I still haven't really come up with a tactic to deal with that.
Not too keen on the SAMs, and didn't survive long enough to do much tactical investigation.

Edit: (Although I did manage a new high score!)

Image

Generally, I've been going at least 5 houses on (halfway+, I counted 9 houses) and picking up the full load of 16 hostages on the first trip. The houses seem to be rebuilt when all destroyed, even if you don't lose a life - but I think you may need to return to the hospital for this to happen.

Hi Folks,

Below are my humble discoveries.....no alien space ships were harmed in the process of said discoveries....

Quick tips on Airlift....(as experienced by.....me..... :-))

1/ Only take 14 survivors on first run....allows you to go to second screen without planes to interfere with you
2/ Take all 16 survivors on second run...your score will be around 32k
3/ Stay low on third run until you get to an unbombed house....try to land before anything can attack you and you MAY get lucky and get a full house of survivors.....or you can try to take a few at a time on this screen too....again you may want to fill fully up.
4/ The next run is iffy at best and good luck....don't know how to play it at all.....just have been lucky to get as high a score as I did.

With no small thanks to all the advice in the thread, I must admit I found the game a bit - well - easy.

My score here is the third go I've ever had at the game (I pressed escape during the second one after a stupid early death).

I just flew low, grabbed who I can - not worrying unduly if it's not a full complement - and flew back. If there's anything on screen troubling me, I just turned round until its gone off the screen.

Didn't have too much gyp with the surface-to-air missiles until one accounted for my last life. Up until that point I think I only had one near-ish miss.

I've had a hectic week or so at work and been unable to play at all. I'll try to get a better score in before the deadline.

Great job by KarateEd with the high scores btw. Many thanks! =D>

After successfully changing the PSU caps in the B+ then plugging everything back together correctly (I thought) - the computer failed to start up - it didn't even make a start up beeeeeep...Then I spotted that in my haste I had wired 0v to +5v on the final set of plugs on the power lead from the PSU.

Luckily after correcting my error and trying again, it worked perfectly - I'm glad the B's switch mode PSU has a fail safe on short circuits!

So finally I have had a few attempts at this game, without reading the above hints and tips (now I'll have to try again with this knowledge)... My score at the moment is 77030 :)

To be fair, a year was not specified, so it could be Monday 19th January 2015 . Maybe this is to give plenty of time for those of us who are not so fast and agile with the old fingers and/or brain... 8-[

Well done! You spotted the deliberate mistake! I can't believe it took you lot almost 2 weeks to spot it!

It's still running, 5 hours left.

Sorry to leave this until the last minute, been too busy. Anyway, I still suck at this game, but at least here's a somewhat less pathetic score.

I found I seem to be able to get away with 15. Is this right?

But I still can't even get as much as 60k, so will have to give this up as a bad job. Well done, everyone!
