Does anyone have any thoughts on whether changing the keyboard layout in beebem/b-em/whatever should be allowed? I personally think it is ok and for this game probably required. I simply cannot stretch my thumb to the space bar while a finger is on shift or z on this laptop.

I've no objection to redefining keys on the emulator. I may have a go on BeebEm myself, as I won't have access to my Beeb until the weekend.

Cheers,
Simon.

Uh-oh, am I posting first?

When I was a kid, I thought that the control scheme was "hard" because I was a stupid kid. Now I realise it's just "hard". I'm just not quick enough at saving the spatulas.

I don't feel like I've mastered this game in any sense, so this is no sort of benchmark:

I've been to the Lake district for a few days so have not had time to have a go yet. Hopefully will post a score later on this evening.

not too bad a score, really like these type of games but they always have awkward keys to use and you can
never redefine them (still not as bad as Felix in the Factory)

Respect to the creators of this game for making something that's even more brutal and hard to get the hang of than the original Defender :D

It's a pretty good conversion, all in all. I've been using the "Model B" emulator, because it seems to be the only one that you can use a real PC joystick assigned to keys as you see fit.

TopBanana -

Best I can do so far is:

Defender/Planetoid/Guardian is one of those games I always loved, but was really, really bad at.

Terrible early attempts here. I've been dying within seconds. I'll knuckle down with it when I get a chance.

An extra hundred points! That was worth all that work :?

I wish they'd de-bounced the flip direction key. Don't know if it's my joystick or what, but a lot of the time when I press it I end up doing a full 360, facing the same direction I was before I pressed it, which messes up my game no end.

I've always found this is a keys only game - it took a lot of practice to get used to them, but over the years of playing many different versions of Defender before I got a genuine cabinet, I've used this combination of keys on just about every version of Defender I could lay my hands on (mainly Williams Classics and MAME).

You do get used to them eventually .....

Oh my god! That is a HARD game!
I've played for about an hour and have managed to fill the table with lots of scores around the same mark - 24400 being the highest. I got distracted and pressed break so don't have a screen shot but I'm pretty sure I'll get slightly higher this some time over the weekend.

My strategy at the moment is to slowly move along the screen despatching each enemy as I encounter it. Any tips for a better strategy?
Most deaths occur due to something entering the screen behind me or me getting totally confused with the control scheme and looking for the left/right key!

See (4) & (5) below

1. The only time you shouldn't be shooting is when you may shoot one of your "men" on the planet, otherwise, keep shooting.
2. Keep shooting.
3. Keep shooting.
4. Never sit still - if you are not moving you are a sitting duck and things will sneak up behind you.
5. Combine steps 1 - 4 by thrusting and shooting whilst you hug the planet surface.
6. Never look at the keyboard - it's like driving, you don't look at the brake pedal when you need to brake. If you take your eyes off the screen you're dead.
7. Master the use of reverse - you should be able to fly past an enemy, do a quick flip reverse, fire one shot and reverse again without losing momentum.
8. Did I mention, keep shooting ?
9. Kill the Landers first so they don't turn in to mutants (see (5) )

Thanks for the tips. Other than looking at the keys and stopping regularly I think I'm getting the hang of it. I'm a little disappointed that I'm not going to have enough time to play this much more during the competition as I think I could end up with a reasonably good score with a bit of practice. I've never really got into defender style games in the past as they seemed too hard. Anyway my score is 32300.

I just can't get my head around the fact that the white pixels are bullets and not background stars.

OH BLOODY BLOODY HELL

Just got over 100,000, and then promptly pressed F12 (break) instead of Print Screen

Not entirely sure if I can replicate how flukey I've just been (I think I got extra lives at the point of losing my last life four times), but I feel like I'm at least getting somewhere with it.

Leaving those red ships that spawn the little sods till last on each level seems to be working a treat.

Nowhere near the score I've just made and lost, but I'm posting it up before I wipe this one as well

Final attempt.

It's a bit mad how much quicker you can rack up points as the levels progress. I used two smart bombs in quick succession and got two extra lives.
