Season 11 Game Nominations

Post by KarateEd » Thu Dec 20, 2018 6:37 pm

Hi Folks,

Onto Season 11 then......Please post your 3 chosen games using the guidelines below and submit them in this thread. Please ensure the game exists online (I'll continue posting so that you can download from the Complete BBC Games Archive - http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/index.php). If it doesn't exist there then please check that it exists in the pages here: http://www.stairwaytohell.com/bbc/index ... diskimages If you know of an internet location of a game that isn't at either of these sites (highly unlikely though) then please post that for me.

It will start on January 7th, 9:00 PM UK time. This gets us over the rest of the Holidays and gives everyone plenty of time to put in 3 games. Cutoff for admitting games will be January 4th at 9:00 PM UK time in order to give me time to get the 11th season site set up so we can start on time.

Again, please submit (ONLY) 3 games that you like. The stipulation is that they must not have yet been played within Season 7, 8, 9 or 10. If you have a game(s) that wasn't chosen in the last 4 seasons then you may Choose it for Season 11. If there are duplicate games chosen (if you check the list though, there shouldn't be) then whoever chose the game first keeps the choice and the duplicator may choose a different game if they wish. See up to 3 game rule below.

Try also to choose 3 games that make sense as a score competition. ie: Elite or Revs don't make sense for this competition. There must be a proper score within whatever game is chosen or it will be replaced. Also, the games should not be ones that take forever to play through one go otherwise few will want to play it. If you're proficient then the game may get long but first you must be proficient and that's ok.

If you don't want to choose 3 games, you don't have to but it will allow us more choice for Season 11.

Some games have the ability to start different ways..... ie: different levels to start. If you have a preference, kindly state that in this thread when you pick the game.

These are more guidelines than rules but I think most people understand how it works.

It's a crap shoot what games are chosen. It's completely random (my wife used to pick them but sadly I now pick them from a bowl that is raised over my head so will have no idea what is being chosen). Also, the papers are folded so I could be looking at them and still not see so it's more random than the random generator in the Beeb.

I can't think of anything else at the moment but I will get the thread set up for choosing your games for Season 11.

If you have any questions, please hold them for the thread that needs to be set up and I'll answer them in there for everyone as well as possible. Also note that Sydney is an Admin for this section of the site and can answer anything that's asked as well.

Thanks again everyone for participating and see you in the next round.

Just so everyone is aware of what was chosen the last 4 seasons, please don't choose any of these games again.....tx....Ed...... :-)

These are the games that may not be chosen for Season 11: I will add and subtract these as explained in my previous message.

First two from previous season but not selected and not played in previous 4 seasons:

I know it's a classic but I've never had a good play of it...
Chuckie Egg http://bbcmicro.co.uk//gameimg/discs/25 ... kieEgg.ssd

Another classic, again never played it in the competition... BITD I remember getting through to reverse gravity stage and mind being blown.
Thrust http://bbcmicro.co.uk//gameimg/discs/43 ... Thrust.ssd

Third choice, something I've wanted to have a play through for a while now.
Boffin http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/gameimg/discs ... Boffin.ssd

Hi

I'm new to the high scores challenge and I would like have a bash in Season 11.

I have spent most of today looking at all the old games I used to play on my Electron (I never had a Beed until this year!), but for some reason I always fall back to the very first games that I got with my very first Electron way back in Christmas of 1983 (or 84) can't quite remember. So for that reason my coices are all the original Acornsoft classics.

I have also been mighty impressed by some of the new releases and just spent an hour playin Phoenix!

So here's the classic Acornsoft list.

Acornsoft Arcadians - http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/gameimg/discs ... adians.ssd
Acornsoft Snapper - http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/gameimg/discs ... pperV1.ssd
Acornsoft Hopper - http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/gameimg/discs ... Hopper.ssd

As it's now freely available to download (as of today) how about Retro Software's first release, Zap!?

http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1889

The Krystal Connection is also now free to download, but from what I remember, when we used to run it at events, the scoring mechanism wasn't ideal for high score contests (as it was possible to rack up higher scores by hanging around on lower levels than actually progressing to later levels).

I have two games that both seem solid, despite Phoenix being WiP, that I would like more playtime/feedback and that I think are good candidates:
Scramble (Retro Software) http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=2904
Phoenix (Retro Software) http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=2719 unfinished as it still has flicker, but well received at shows.
I hope they both work well, but we have struggled through imperfect games before if not.
Both should be good on all hardware and emulators, except maybe some slight gfx issues that should not affect game-play.
Both also support keyboard or joystick (two button); the joystick is enabled by pressing fire during play.

Here are my nominations:

Felix in the Factory
Helter Skelter
Spooks and Spiders

If any of those are not acceptable then my alternatives are these:
Firebug
Sorcery
Trapper

Cheers!

Ok Folks,

We'll go with what we have to this point. We'll be starting on Monday, our 11th Season to date.

I will start putting this together this weekend and get you ready for some gaming goodness.
