Best so far - 14,642

Nice conversion, I'm finding the spiders appearing right on top of you a little annoying though! Got to stay away from the sides, I suppose.

Not sure this counts as point-whoring though...
I would say that it is not in the spirit of the competition, and that this sort of thing has come up before and we have had to avoid it in old games.
Yes, I have to agree with Tricky on this one. Thanks for being honest about this one Barbarossa.... we'll disallow this score though good job anyway as it's not that easy to avoid the spider. Sometimes he just pops onto you even when you're actually not sitting on the spot but trying to shoot something too.

Are you guys trying to complete levels by completely killing the centipedes?

Is there any benefit to doing that? Does the game ever end?

The game never ends, but I did make the spawning of the extra segments speed up, I'll have to check whether it speeds up per level or per
spawned segment.
Completing levels should be the best way to score points, but does have the drawback of more rouge heads, up to 7, then they go back to 0.The scorpion comes on at the start of every forth level to poison some mushrooms, which in turn makes the centipede go mad and dive down the screen.

My apologies gentlemen. I guess I was so relieved this one (gyroscope) was over that I must have forgotten some of my duties. Your scores are worthy considering this game and that you played it at all is meritorious.

I believe all is square on the score front now.

New high score, this is a really good version of Centipede, my only critcism of it is that if the spider is on screen when you lose a life or complete a screen, you have to wait for it to go away before you can carry on, sometimes it goes straight away, other times it hangs about almost deliberately, when you just want to get on with playing, other than that, great game.

I have a new version with tweaked spider:
It doesn't always start on your side if you are at the edge, this should free any trapped segments and be a little fairer.
It always starts at the bottom of the screen, meaning that if you are not at the bottom, you have time to dodge.
When the level ends, the spider goes down off the screen, rather than hanging around for ages.

I have also added three tunes:
"Happy days are here again" if you get the top spot.
"The Entertainer" if you get on the high score table.
"The skater's waltz" if you fail to get on the table.

The game now starts by displaying "GAME OVER" with the high-score table and the skaters waltz.
The spider waits until the tune has finished before "freeing" the segments.
The tune stops immediately if you start a new game.

I am also tempted to make new segments spawn faster and faster if you stay on the level for too long, point pressing the flea and spider :O

I will release this once the competition has finished, along with any other tweaks that get suggested.

It has been pointed out that because you are all sooo good, that it will be hard to get on the high-score table for "ordinary" players at events.
I will probably provide a high-score table file with everyone's scores divided by 10 that can be used for these, unless anyone strongly objects!

If you want a name other than the one you have entered in your screen shots, please let me know at the end of the competition.
Names can be up to 6 characters consisting of: A..Z, :, /, space, medium explosion, small explosion or the shooty head thing.

Thank you all for allowing me to subvert you competition, I hope you have enjoyed it.

PS I have just been playing on real hardware and although my beeb is at a funny angle, it is so much smoother and more responsive than an emulator on a PC, I can now get 10K+ with more lives than not on the competition version of the game.

Sure way for me to get a new high score against my last high score is to post the score table...... 27,180 ......

Awesome btw Tricky - a sure way to have our hearts is to listen and tweak.... you've certainly done that, thank you.

Nitpicks:

One thing that's annoying me a bit. If you're in a situation like the screenshot below:
centipede-mockup.png
centipede-mockup.png (566 Bytes) Viewed 2360 times
...where the centipede is on the way back up the screen again - if you shoot the centipede from where you are, you will die. Is this a bug? Doesn't make much sense to me for that to kill you if the centipede is on the way back up again. It even happens if there's only one centipede segment going past. I've lost so many lives to this.

It would be nice if the Escape button aborted your game and took you back to the high score table. For some reason, I'm having trouble even getting off the first level without losing a life today, and it's a pain to have to kill yourself another three times to start a new game.

I confess, the annoying centipede segment deaths are a bug, but at least the spider is better now. I will try and work out why it is happening and fix it.

What about keeping the top one or maybe top 3 score at their full value and reducing the rest? Give people a target to aim for.
