To enter your name, use up and down to change the letter and left and right to change which letter you are changing and finally, press fire to finish.

The joystick is ignored until you press fire, then you can use either keyboard or joystick.

If you camp at the sides the spider will pounce.

Watch out for the segments reaching out as they change direction or explode.

I haven't tried the joystick on compact. I'll try and fix any issues quickly, but I don't know of any.

Possible bug report: Holding shift pauses the centipede but the player, spider and thing that lays mushrooms whilst falling down the screen are unaffected. Using Beebem 4.15(Beta 1), 12 Feb 2018

I'd been meaning to try this out, having read so much about it and the high score challenge was the perfect opportunity - very nice conversion =D>

Scored 13754 on my second go, so certainly room for improvement, just need to find the time!

PS. I used BeebEm as the JSBeeb link doesn't work for me, gives a "Unable to load discs..." error.

The game doesn't check for shift, I'll take a look.

I was worried that I would need more digits in the scores, but all the game elements work together to encourage risk reward and in turn to trap you. I hadn't played it much in the arcades and had missed most of the subtleties that I found adding the gameplay features one by one.

So, the SHIFT "bug" is some debug code that I don't even remember writing!
I've taken it out and updated the high scores ;)
The game is unchanged, so as long as you aren't using the "cheat", there is no need to change!
The Play in jsbeeb in broswer link above seems broken, but this should work.

Score 17,169.
You should be able to use any of the guides for Centipede, but I have tried to block the point pressing techniques.

When I set up custom controls to move '*' to '@' Beebem also set the shifted character there too so every time I pushed up shift was also being pressed too.

Extra characters are what was on the sprite page after the letters, so I left them accessible :)

Flibble, I think you might have had too much practice already!

Hope your are all enjoying it.
Anyone tried an analogue joystick - just wondering how it feels?

I have the day off as it is the Mrs' birthday and for some reason I'm allowed to play :)
23,753
I was playing earlier and scored 3 +5 for one damaged mushroom on my first life, still got over 20K.
PS You get the extra life at 0,000 ;)
PPS If you want to save you score, you have to make the disc writeable, then CTRL-BREAK then SHIFT-BREAK, it should say saved and then quit.
To re-run, just SHIFT-BREAK again. - Take your screen shot first, just in case.
PPPS I used the small explosion in the font as a full stop and made the game start on the GAME OVER screen, but haven't changed the game at all.

45961...

Not sure this counts as point-whoring though.

What happened was the bits of the centipede were trapped in a loop down the left-hand bottom corner, and I knew that if I hung around near the right-hand side, the spider would keep appearing on that side, so I just had to keep picking it off.

Tricky, if I could make a suggestion, that sometimes (maybe 1 in 10 times?) the spider should be allowed to appear on the opposite side of the screen to where the player is, that would then give it a chance to disrupt the pattern?

I would say that it is not in the spirit of the competition, and that this sort of thing has come up before and we have had to avoid it in old games.

I will tweak it, thanks for the report, but I would suggest letting them out if it happens again .
Still a great score, the spider can be "tricky" :) 19,344 is up there though.
