Has this round started?

Arghhh so many keys, I ended up using left hand for escape and right hand on the 8 action keys, jamming random combinations of these produced this abysmal score: 8600

I find this game completely incomprehensible!

Here's a score. There may not be another... :/

I find the same, however, I'm willing to stick it out and figure that I'll learn something in the process.

Let's see how flexible you are Barbarossa...... I'm sure with a little effort you could do very well at this game.

Well I high-kicked my way to some guy called Dan, but he break-danced me to death.

Not sure if you're having a joke or not but - 1st Dan means 1st Black Belt in martial arts..... that's the starting point of really learning a martial art. From there you go to 2nd Dan and so forth, which just means 2nd Black Belt.

It's not really the colour of the belt that matters, it's the process and learning that matters. Getting to 1st Dan means you're Sensei, if he's any good at all will help you rid yourself of the garbage in you that prevents you from being a true martial artist which includes a spiritual component, though many don't understand it that way.

In short, the higher up you move in Dans, the less you will ever need to fight because you will realize that fighting is the lowest form of man's existence. The serious martial artist will learn that there is no need to fight and a master at his craft will never put himself in a position where he would have to fight. Not only would the fight likely be unfair but he recognizes this as the basest way for humans to solve any situation.

Along with those responsibilities are the ones to protect the weak and innocent from physical harm should he/she see that happening. It's all very humbling to know of these things.

I hope I've got it mostly correct and it's somewhat understandable.

If you were just joking then I've probably wasted my breath a bit.

New high score.
Mixing up high kicks and low kicks.
More luck that judgement...

Wow. I'd forgotten how crude the graphics were in that game.

On the other hand, doesn't it change palette part-way down the screen? If so, I'm impressed that whatever is doing the screen grabs is coping.

Best score so far, been about 30 years since I last played this one, had it as part of Five Star Games 3 on the Electron, and never bothered with it on the BBC, now I remember why ! too many keys, it's a decent enough game, but it's like the fighting game equivalent of a flight simulator with the amount of keys used !!

I'd played this briefly on the C64 many years ago and my memories of it are better than the beeb version. It's a bit slow. I was very good at IK+ on the C64 and amiga so maybe I'll improve from here. Are there any other fighting games worth playing on the beeb? I really like Yie Ar Kung Fu but apart from that I'm struggling to think of any more. Barbarian? That's not very good either when compared with the C64 version.

Anyway onto my score:

Hey Sir Syd,

When viewing the games that were nominated, this was the only game I dreaded coming up..... I'm notoriously bad at fighting games, even though I've done a reasonable level of karate. However, I'm sort of getting the hang of this by applying karate techniques of thinking..... I think that's the key....quick strike when appropriate, patience when needed, varied attack to make sure you're not predictable.

Edit: Oh, did I say that I'm kind of enjoying the game despite it's faults....?

Best I can do so far... I keep trying to do the one knockout kick but doesn't always work.

I think this game is disguised in a way It's a very pixel perfect game in that you have to be in a certain position with your opponent before the strike will work to best advantage. You get 1/2 a Yin/Yan when you don't score as well as you should and none at all when you miss. In fact, usually when I miss, I get socked in the mouth with something.

This works the same way in the dojo when you're sparring. 1/2 point for a semi good strike. That would be defined as maybe not a loud enough ki ei....or shout or not enough retraction on a kick or punch.

I found once I 'followed' through on my kicks, they worked much better.

Ah yes. I've played by fair means of foul and quite liked it, I'm pretty sure I've played karate combat too but don't remember much about it. Never played the big ko though.

This is a good game, better than Superior's Karate Combat from what I remember. Here's my first attempt, I still have a lot to figure out with the controls... 18,600
