I thought what a rubbish score, Ed, even I'll beat that in a game or two ... haven't got past 300 yet! Too many varmints!

Good colourful game =D> but probably a bit too fast for old dead-cat-reflexes me!

I had 3 goes this morning. This game is as I remember it from over 30 years ago - a nice little platformer with decent, responsive controls.

My first go at this today and I got further than I got got back in the day.
This probably means I'll spend the rest of this challenge trying to beat it :(

Nice game, gets difficult fast and ladder placement is critical for better chance.

This is probably pushing it nearly to the limit (although 10000 isn't out of the question if you get lucky). I had 7650 on my first life but it gets difficult to score points when there are 6 or 7 speedy enemies chasing you

This could have been a great game if only so many things were randomly generated.
Ladder placement makes a huge difference. Also, the time the pitchfork lasts for when you've collected it seems to have a degree of randomness to it and sometimes it takes ages to reappear after you've used it.
Anyway...

You will. Just make sure you drop the rat poisen on a level that goes all the way through. If you stay alive long enough, you'll get him. That gets you on the high score table.

You never know, you may beat me again on this game.

This is one I never played very much BITD. Not sure why, maybe because of the strange choice of keyboard controls.

Here's my starter score... 4300

You can choose a different key set, for instance to the standard x,y :,? keysets if you want Chrisn.

That's a really helpful feature. I don't think the original release had that option, as far as I remember...

New high score... 7450

Ladders! It's all about the ladders!

Well that and making sure to kill as many as possible with the pitch fork.

Purple guy seems to follow you if he is close enough, did last long enough to fully test this though.

Something I have often wondered about a lot of similar platform games is why when jumping it is such a large step up, glide, then large step down. It occurred to me that this is likely to keep the character graphic byte aligned which would greatly simplify the plotting process allowing for more action on the screen.

Obviously ladders are handled differently but this also could be optimised by have specific frames for different spots on the ladder rather than using a generic plotter for all sprites.

Something to have in the back of the mind when returning to my own coding projects :-k
