VIC 20 - very low serial number - 0415 !

Post by martinw » Tue Oct 16, 2018 8:40 am

I have had a slight hankering for a Commodore PET for a wee while, not sure why, then a gentleman at work offered me a VIC 20 in a box (a baby PET by all accounts), a bit yellow, but no more information. I opened it up (the box) and have come to the realisation it is pretty early/old. Late 1981 old to be exact (looking at the date codes on the ICs) and less than 500 on the serial number for a computer that sold over a million units.

One of things I've gleaned (Googling) is some of the early units used Commodore PET keyboards.

I think this is borne out by the fact the keyboard has some of the holes that are not used covered up 8)

Are they any good?

I'll keep you informed how I get on with it.

Not bad for a freebie! They are pretty basic (no pun). I don't think they had the charm of a zx81 :)

Cost me £30, nearly free  Are they as bad as a ZX81  I thought I saw colour video on the interweb :? I guess the low amount of RAM is the limiting factor ... :?:

Nice machine! :D

Regarding the serial number though, bear in mind that it says "Made in W Germany", and the serial number is prefixed "WG". So yours is the 425th made in Germany. Not all VICs were made in Germany (I would assume).

I found this site which contains this list (edited a bit by me to make it easier to understand):

WG and WGA = for Germany (Made in Germany)
WGB = for UK (Made in Germany)
WGC = for rest of Europe (Made in Germany)
U.K.B = for UK (Made in England)
P and V0 = for USA (Made in USA)
CC = for Canada (Made in Canada)
only Number = Japan

...so I think yours is the 425th destined for the UK.

EDIT: have a look at the serial number registry. Someone has serial number #14 for the UK!

I remember City Bomber! Someone brought a VIC into school and we played that. At the time, the idea of a smaller PET with colour seemed pretty cool to me.

Let me know when you don't need the VIC anymore :-)
